At 39, Ade was still living in a face-me-I-face-you apartment in Lagos. One evening, he pulled a worn-out piece of paper from his wallet. It was a list he had written when he was 24, filled with the things he believed he would achieve before turning 40: build a house for his family, buy a good car, send his children to university, take care of his father, and grow a successful business.

Life had other plans.

His business was destroyed after a flood, and before he could recover, his father became seriously ill. Everything he had managed to save went into hospital bills. The woman he hoped to marry eventually left, saying she wanted someone with a more secure future. Not long after, he lost his job during a round of layoffs.

Despite everything, he never allowed his struggles to define him. A neighbour once asked how he still managed to smile through it all. Ade simply shrugged and said, "I know who I am. Things just didn't work out the way I hoped."

This story has been stuck in my head ever since I heard it.

A guy I know in Abuja was about to walk into what could have been the biggest opportunity of his life. The kind of deal that could completely change his future.

He didn't take it lightly. He spent weeks preparing for it, rehearsed his presentation over and over, and made sure every single detail was in place. He was ready.

Then, on the morning of the meeting, everything went sideways.

His fiancée suddenly started a serious argument. The calls wouldn't stop. Text messages kept pouring in. Voice notes. Tears. Accusations. It was one thing after another.

He kept pleading with her, "Please, can we talk about this later? This meeting is really important."

But the drama didn't stop.
