I have decided that I will not be contesting the 2026 Victorian State election.
Since being elected to the Victorian Upper house in 2018, I have been proud to serve 8 years in outstanding Victorian Labor Governments. My intention was to serve two terms, and I have been fortunate enough to serve those two terms in Government.
I was, and am, the only labor woman that was elected to the North-Eastern Metropolitan Region since the Upper House reforms were introduced in 2006, and the only woman representative currently elected and serving in that upper house region. Since the creation of the Legislative Council in 1856, 60 women have served in the chamber. And whilst 29 have been Labor women, only 6 of those 29 (including myself) have represented the north-eastern suburbs in the history of the Upper House despite the 2022 election seeing 22 of the 40 seats in the Legislative Council being filled by women.
Since entering politics, I have remained true to my values and advocated strongly for a better deal for public education. I have successfully advocated for many public schools in my region to be upgraded and made the case for policy change. There was never a more heartfelt and truly meaningful moment seeing the new Croydon Community School being opened along with upgrades to the Croydon Special Development School. Seeing the joy on the faces of students when they see their school being upgraded and knowing that the Government cares enough to invest in them, has meant the world to them. This should never be under-estimated. And the Teachers who work with our most vulnerable and disadvantaged students every day in our great state, public education system – you change lives – for the better.
Locally, my team and I have helped many sporting clubs, schools, kinders, community groups and multicultural groups over the last 8 years – whether it be through upgrades, sponsorships, donations of books or chocolate hampers for fundraising efforts, it’s been great to be a part of each community and to help advocate for whatever was needed. We’ve handed out over 13,500 shopping bags, delivered over 514,000 copies of the Eastern Metro Bugle in 7 editions, and more importantly, donated over 1400 books to schools and/or kinders. Our Public-School Librarians have really appreciated the ability to complete that series of books that had that 1 missing edition, as well as being able to choose books that round out or update the school library collection, with the sole aim of helping kids to find that love of reading from books – not digital copy.
