What that instinct does internally is make sure the kitchen does not contradict itself in ways the customer eventually tastes, even without seeing the cause: a technical promise the delivery team cannot keep, a commercial term that quietly undercuts a relationship someone spent a year building. It is possible, in principle, for a disciplined seller without that lived experience to build the same habits through process alone, mapping the buying committee, rehearsing the objections, auditing the internal handoffs. It is simply far slower to build, and far easier to get subtly wrong, without having once felt the cost of getting it wrong from the other side of the table.
None of this is visible on the day of signature. It becomes visible much later, on an ordinary day when someone reopens the file, not out of suspicion, just habit, and asks, quietly, whether it was worth it. That question, asked without the vendor in the room, is usually the only verdict that ends up mattering. Everything before it was simply the entry fee for being allowed to answer it well.
The buyer signs, eventually, or doesn’t, and either way, the decision was never really about the proposal on the buyer’s desk. It was about whether someone on the other side of the table understood the simulation the buyer was running well enough to build something that survives it: a need raised before the buyer had fully named it, requirements that stayed true to that need instead of drifting toward whatever was easiest to deliver, a business case the buyer could defend without the vendor in the room, a kitchen of internal functions that didn’t contradict each other in front of the buyer, and a meal that, eighteen months later, was still worth having ordered.
That is the entire argument, stated once, without the scaffolding: buyer and seller are not two temperaments but two optimization functions, rational within their own frames and structurally blind to each other’s. Rapport and better pitching narrow the gap; they do not close it. What closes it is a mind that has actually sat in the buyer’s chair and cannot afterward sell without hearing what the buyer hears, disciplined by a seller’s bias for action, and expressed, at the account level, not as persuasion but as the quieter, harder discipline of running the kitchen so that what finally reaches the table is the meal the customer was craving all along.
Personal thoughts - the buying/Selling cycle:
There is a moment, in almost every enterprise sale, when the paperwork is finished and nothing happens. The proposal is strong. The pricing is fair. The champion is enthusiastic. And still, for days or weeks, the signature does not come. Sellers tend to read this as friction, a stalled approval, a slow procurement cycle, a committee dragging its feet. It is usually something else entirely. Somewhere inside that silence, a person is sitting alone with a question the vendor was never in the room to hear: if this goes wrong, it will be my name on it, am I certain enough to carry that.
That question is the real transaction. Everything that precedes it, the discovery calls, the demos, the negotiated terms, is simply an attempt to earn a “yes” to it, usually without knowing the question is even being asked. This is the quiet failure at the center of most enterprise selling. It is not a failure of product or price. It is a failure of frame.
The seller has been trained to treat the signature as the finish line. For the buyer, the signature is where their exposure to the decision begins, and it does not end when the deal does.
No amount of likeability closes that gap on its own, because likeability operates entirely inside the seller’s world, it makes the seller more pleasant to sit across from, but it does nothing to answer the question actually being asked in the silence. This does not hold for every purchase; a low-stakes buy with little personal exposure attached rarely triggers the question at all, and rapport is often sufficient there. It holds for the decisions that show up later on a scorecard, a budget review, or a performance conversation, the ones with a name attached to them. For those, what closes the gap is something far less common: someone who has personally sat where the buyer is sitting, who has once carried a decision like this one, defended it under real consequence, and lived with the outcome long after the people who sold it to them had moved on to the next account. That kind of person cannot, afterward, sell the old way. They hear the unspoken question because they have asked it themselves, and everything about how they work changes as a result, the need gets raised before the customer can fully name it, the requirement is kept honest instead of drifting toward whatever is easiest to build, and the business case is written so it can be defended in a room where no vendor is present to explain it.
No single person delivers an account like this alone; it is assembled by many hands the customer never sees, technical, commercial, delivery, the way a meal is assembled by a kitchen no diner ever walks into.
