3年前、母が台所で倒れた。

くも膜下出血。

一命はとりとめた。

でも左半身に麻痺が残った。

右手しかまともに動かない。

母は自分で背中を洗えなくなった。

最初は、父が手伝っていた。

でも父はその年の春に単身赴任になった。

家には母と弟だけが残った。

弟は当時高校1年。

私に一度だけ電話してきた。

「姉ちゃん、背中ってどうやって洗うの」

笑ってしまった。

「そんなの自分で洗えるでしょ」

弟は、黙ってから言った。

「俺のじゃない」

意味がすぐにはわからなかった。

母は人に体を見られたくなかった。

ヘルパーも、頑なに断っていた。

「息子になら、いいの」

そう言ったらしい。

弟は、それから毎晩母の背中を流した。

私が「気持ち悪い」と思っていた3年間。

弟は母の右手では届かない場所を、洗い続けていた。

正月、私はもう一度、風呂場を覗いた。

母の背中に、石鹸を滑らせる弟がいた。

母は、目を閉じて言った。

「気持ちいいわぁ」

弟は母の背中を流していたんじゃない。

母が、一番嫌がっていた「誰かの世話になる」を

世話だと思わせないために、毎晩風呂に入っていた。

私が見ていたのは弟が母の背中を流す姿じゃなかった。

@devonzuegel Lord of the Rings when I was 13, first English book I worked my way through. Hooked on Tolkien and fantasy since. Took me some time though 😊
