@IanTaverne You have to remember that the scan there has:
- been colour "corrected" so is not accurate to the release print at all
- been done on a sensor that cannot capture the entire range
- then been uploaded to youtube and heavily compressed digitally

@KlonoaPrime Usually not the film print, but just the way it's been scanned. Probably looks very acceptable projected.

@kinekovideo I’m quite shocked at the free/open distribution of - let’s be clear - pirated copies of movies.

I can’t see how this helps long term for anyone.

@thewakingally Scanned how? What scanner? What lighting? What correction/grading (if any)?

I will join in any call for studios to stop meddling and release the original theatrical versions, but I have never seen a scan match what a projected film print looks like.

@Madness832 @sleepyserenade No, they use xenon short arc lamps. But those get extremely hot and need active cooling to keep the lamp from overheating and exploding, and the reflective mirror from heat damage. The hose on top is the extract of that cooling.

Carbon arc projection, in the UK!

It was great fun to learn how to project with carbons, and then get to show a few of my IB Technicolor film reels. Colour never looked so good!

Over the weekend, the Friends of the Broadway Prestwick made history, giving the first public 35mm presentations using carbon arcs in Scotland for many, many years. What a treat to witness this from the booth!

@furrtek You should see the earlier model, the DA10, it’s just pure DSP56ks, as the Zoran chip wasn’t released then! Here’s a photo of some of those cards from mine.

@wasmax2000 @sleepyserenade This is at the “Widescreen Weekend”’film festival in Bradford, UK - the only venue still able to currently run Cinerama.

I saw “How the West Was Won” last year, also an original IB release print. Looks a little shrunken so you can see the panel gaps, but otherwise beautiful!
