Really, no actor in the Middle East ever posed a security threat to the US. There are plausible geo-strategic reasons, yes, but American identity and politics are so defined by nationalism, militarism and empire, that maintaining dominance and projecting strength abroad has become a necessary theatre to sustain the ideology that keep the whole monstrosity together. In that context, the Middle East is just an amorphous mass of thoroughly dehumanised brown people who from the reservoir of asymmetrical mass murder victims as a political resource for the careers, egos and wallets of US elites and special interests. Perhaps we'll eventually think of it as a typical late-stage imperial power whose violence abroad reflects internal weakness, but, by reinforcing the domestic status quo, ultimately only acts to hasten its decline.

You can argue that this is downstream of geopolitics, but it’s clear that many people in supposedly liberal societies overtly believe the lives of one group of people to be worth much less than the comfort of another. The violence is inseparable from the entrenched racial order.
