I often had him in mind when I walked the streets. He was so very present.
It was just simply that his chair was empty, so to speak.

He does live and reign, very much.

Now tired men throw back the shutters of their balconies and step blinking into the pale hot light — etiolated flowers of afternoons spent in anguish, tossing upon ugly beds, bandaged by dreams.

¡Vamos a descubrirlos! #HiloRomano
Never ceases to amaze that Cavafy spoke Greek with a soft Liverpool accent, the result of his childhood in what was then an Egypt-dependent Lancashire cotton industry
What is to be done? Generally speaking, nothing.
The dead will have to bury their dead. . . . Try to hold fast to the living thing, which destroys as it goes, but remains sweet. Retreat to the desert, and fight.

Melancholy, I went out onto the balcony —
I went out so I might clear my head by seeing at least
a little of this city that I love,
a little movement in the street and in the shops.
— Cavafy
