The year is 2025. The United States of America is falling to dictatorship.

Illegitimately appointed oligarchs, including the richest man on the planet, employ their unimaginably vast resources to withhold crumbs of sustenance from the populace.

The most recent presidential election left half of the country reeling, and has already driven many voters of the alleged victor to the point of despair and poignant public displays of regret.

The information environment is heavily polluted, with far too many toxic oil spills and far too few cleanups.

All the while, corporate lobbyists take a paycheck to fight for destructive policies, and disinformation producers work at breakneck speed and pace, aided by daily advances in machine learning.

Oligarchs employ tech barons to surveil—and mob bosses to target—their opposition with legal attacks and smear campaigns. The "opposition" includes any individual or group having the temerity to speak out, and threats of severe, life altering consequence are casually bandied about without repercussion.

Because of all this, the majority of her citizens remain blissfully unaware, despite a sizeable minority whose discontent grows by the day.

Widespread protests are beginning to materialize, despite similarly widespread censorship on every major social media platform, and the hidden surveillance risks which are ever-present in our everyday interactions.

The drumbeat of our dystopian fears, steadily increasing over the past decades as reflected by countless films, books, and other forms of artistic media, are taking life.

The year is still 2025. If we do nothing, what story will be written about 2026?
