As the only female coach that was left in Trinity League girls soccer, it would have been nice to get to speak about MY player for a well-deserved award instead of them getting a quote from an opposing rival coach... #ocregister

DM: From the perspective of a first time D1 college soccer parent, this is spot-on accurate. EVERYTHING is earned match to match. Our daughter has earned multiple starts this year, played off the bench in other games and no mins at all in the first couple of games. Being a starter one match means little for the next. On travel weeks, every player is nervous about making the slimmed down roster. Add school on top of this tempo and it is a very different challenge than club. A once in a lifetime experience that will teach many lessons for a successful adult life.

I saw an assistant coach pull a highly regarded player who wasn't producing. The kid lost it, basically threatening to transfer on the sideline as people tried to calm him down. This is the state of sports. Entitlement. Not going to cut if you don't go with who's best performing.

You want to play at an ELITE school?
Show college coaches you understand proper situational “spacial awareness”.
What is Soccer Spacial Awareness?
-The ability to be aware of where your body is during physical activity and where and when to move it.
-Spatial awareness allows you to play with your head up, keep control of the ball and have a mental map of the game around you. You can constantly scan the field to assess the position of players, giving you more time to make a smart decision or be a step ahead of the play
ELITE athletes have an ELITE understanding of spatial awareness.

Agreed. But high school soccer prepares you best for the college athlete experience. New team every year. Find your role every season. Traveling/missing school for a series of two months. 2 games a week. It mimics and can build the character necessary to survive college soccer.
High School Soccer vs Club Soccer🚨
You can be seen and recruited from high school soccer but the vast majority of college soccer players were recruited from club soccer. Especially the recruits attending elite colleges.
Why do college coaches prefer club?
Start with the obvious, you’re more likely to witness elite play against elite in club. (Iron sharpen Iron). So you’re more likely to receive a more accurate evaluation on a recruit.
Recruiting budget constraints. When you’re limited on time and money you can’t be everywhere. Attending club showcases and seeing hundreds of kids over one weekend vs several single HS where the talent doesn’t usually sharpen iron with iron is more convenient $.
Do college coaches attend HS games?
Yes, but don’t expect hundreds or even any there to be honest. It’s VERY rare they attend, and if they do it’s a local college in the area like a D2, D3, NAIA or Juco’s where their low budgets forces them to recruit from HS. Your D1’s , EXTREMELY RARE, if they attend HS games, are there supporting a committed kid or getting everyone excited right before they email you that camp invite $😉.
You want college soccer? Your best bet is club soccer. Especially if you want the colleges everyone has heard of. That’s the Truth.

Your development increases when you apply what you learn with a coach and you work on it at home.
If you’re relying on your limited practice time with your coach to get better, you’ll simply be average.
Elite athletes are doing the work when no one is watching.

So you think you’re a D1 athlete but you don’t have D1 offers?
This spring go watch spring games IN PERSON.
Pay attention to their technical ability, tactical awareness, & their SPEED OF PLAY! How FAST do they cover ground defensively & on the attack.
You’ll see why.

A full ride in college soccer does exist, but only through your academics.
For a full ride in college soccer, you must combine your athletic scholarship + Grades + GPA + ACT/SAT to = a Full Ride.
The better your grades are the more money for school you'll receive.

Parents,
Your kids not starting does not mean they are failures.
Let it sink in one more time.
Your kids not starting does not mean they are failures.
You have to learn to Trust The Process too.
