#Eritrea is solemnly commemorating today the 65th Anniversary of the beginning of the Armed Struggle for national liberation and human dignity.

As it will be recalled, a small people and nation had to suffer the ordeals of Africa's longest war of liberation, (1961-1991), simply because their inalienable right to decolonization, the pronounced provisions of international law, were brazenly compromised and subordinated to mollify the geopolitical interests of global powers and their regional surrogate.

In this respect, September 1st, 1961, epitomizes the noble determination, as well as history of resilience and heroism, of a small people who chose not to succumb to injustices and the logic of crude force or military power!

#Eritrea: Statement by Ambassador Beyene Russom at the 13th World Urban Forum; Baku, Azerbaijan

"In Eritrea, our approach is based on integrated urban-rural development....As we move toward the midpoint of the New Urban Agenda, let us be clear: the future of urbanization in Africa and many nations globally depends on how we treat the link between cities and villages. Eritrea commits to advancing this integrated approach. We call on partners to support investments that connect rural and urban areas through infrastructure, services, and markets. Let us ensure that no community is left behind, whether in a megacity or a mountain village".

Wode Maya is surprised his phone did not get snatched in Eritrea when he was recording using his phone in his car. That is just scratching the surface. If that were to happen, the people in the street would act as a police and apprehend the perpetrator.

There are stories after stories people will tell you that anyone outside of Eritrea will not believe.

Personally, I left very expensive Camera Gear in a car in city center with the windows open for more than an hour and when I came back and realized the windows were open, I did not think the camera would be there.

Alas, the car was untouched and I was so relieved and blown over by that incident. But then there are more stories like a waitress gave back a man who forgot a bag full of cash in a bar....

This is Eritrea! where women walk back home even in dark streets and no one will think of touching them. It does not mean there are not a rare occasions of crime in the cities, but they are rare.

And what is more astonishing is, if you walk to the towns and villages in Eritrea, there is virtually No Police and no crime. You have to see it to believe it, because looking at the world today, no one will believe you.

OPINTION AND ANALYSIS

International Women’s Day 2026: Eritrean Women and Leadership Across Generations

By Nahla Valji, UN Resident Coordinator in Eritrea

*"...Eritrea’s history demonstrates clearly that women are central to national resilience. Their participation during the liberation struggle reflected a principle later affirmed globally through Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security: sustainable peace requires women’s full and meaningful participation".

*"...As UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, I have had the privilege of meeting women who carried Eritrea through conflict and women now shaping its future. The continuity with the past and the resilience and strength derived from it are unmistakable".

Profile Q & A - “Medicine is my Duty; Writing is my therapy”: An Interview with Dr. Ruth Ghirmay; by Kidane Shimendi

Words of wisdom and inspiration:
*"...Personally, March 8 is a testament to the endurance of the Eritrean woman. In my field, I witness women’s strength during the most vulnerable and powerful moments of life—childbirth. I see them as the primary healers and educators of our society. Even Broken Wings Fly is dedicated to that very spirit of overcoming".

*"...As a practitioner in obstetrics and gynecology, March 8 is deeply personal to me. I see women as the 'light of the family' and the backbone of our nation’s health. My work is dedicated to ensuring that every woman’s wings are strong enough to fly—by providing them with the medical advocacy and care they deserve".
