I honestly do not know what you are talking about in this tweet. I wholeheartedly support the quick recovery of Venezuela and I am all in favor of foreign direct investment. However, the corrupt and predatory deal that has been announced will make economic recovery slower, not faster. It gives a minuscule company, whose main asset is its corrupt relationship with Delcy, access to enormous resources, even though they do not have the managerial, technological or financial capital to develop them. So they will have to find partners. But those partners will be repelled by the predatory conditions the Trump administration has set: the USG takes 55% of the future potential profits of all ventures (35% as profits and 20% as subsidized oil), while they put no money into the deal. Who will want to invest under those conditions? Imagine if instead they had put the 17 fields up for an open bidding process with the same economic and legal guarantees? You would have gotten real companies, with real capabilities developing Venezuela. Those capabilities are not in the DoD or the USG, so having them as predatory partners does not help the oil industry. They did not choose to do things in an open, transparent way because it would have had to be less corrupt and less predatory. And to top it all up, they are using the authority to keep things secret of the Ley Anti-bloqueo, designed to evade US sanctions, to keep the agreement secret from Venezuelan citizens and from the world. Chutzpah!!
Nothing you said in your tweet answers any of my points. We will have less short-term recovery and less long-term growth because things are being done in a corrupt and predatory way. But too many smart people, like you, have decided to condone this outrage. I hope that it is because of misinformation and that you will come to see this thing for what it is: an outrage!!
