House of Commons public accounts committee report warns Labour has “all but lost control” of the asylum system.

The damning cross-party inquiry reveals the Home Office cannot account for thousands of failed asylum seekers, with data on at least 41,000 people awaiting deportation now three years out of date.

Ministers have no reliable figures on how many have absconded or left the country voluntarily, which the MPs describe as a “shocking and unacceptable state of affairs.”

The report accuses the department of “directionless bureaucracy,” repeatedly shifting backlogs rather than clearing them, and a “lack of realism” in Labour’s planned reforms, including the pledge to replace asylum courts with a new independent body.

93,500 asylum claims were lodged in the year to March 2026, while the asylum budget hit £4.9 billion last year.

Committee chairman Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown MP said senior officials could not even explain what the system is trying to achieve.
