A woman was brutally murdered with a golf club by her Malawian partner, who then locked her inside a shack with her young child in Lotus River, Cape Town. Neighbours said they heard a child crying inside the shack for a long time. When they knocked and no one answered, they realised something was wrong. They kicked the door open and found the child crying next to the woman’s body. A murder case was opened, and police searched for the suspect without success until someone recognised him in Wynberg and quickly alerted men who were nearby. The group kept him busy while waiting for SAPS.

It analyses tender specifications, tracks shortlisted companies, follows supply history, and flags irregular patterns in minutes work that used to take months of manual digging. The system doesn’t just find the smoke. It maps the entire spiderweb.

And when they looked closer at the addresses and registered companies behind that one phone number, the web was only just beginning to show itself. It was still growing.

Duvenage didn’t mince words South Africa has a strong anti-corruption strategy on paper, but it is run by a leaderless black ANC government that simply does not want to use the tools that would expose the looting. The desire political appetite to stop the theft is missing because we allow this thugs to rob us blind.

So while ordinary South Africans struggle with broken services, collapsing infrastructure and empty coffers, connected networks continue to harvest billions through the same recycled phone numbers, the same shell companies, and the same captured tender system.

AI has given civil society a weapon the state refuses to pick up. OUTA’s message is clear, if government won’t fight this, citizens and independent organisations will have to do it themselves ‼️
