Itβs actually very easy to develop a new mannerism that you perform instinctively. Itβs no more difficult than adding a word to your vocabulary. In the same way, it can sneak up on you if youβre not careful.

I'm always amused by disgruntled replies to speedrun footage with remarks about how the player didn't "really" beat the game because he didn't do it the way the commenter played it when he was a kid. You used to see this a lot before speedrunning became giga popular.
The test of whether a population of outlanders is fit to be treated as peers in our civilisation is if they do not do this when one of their own steps out of line. I haven't seen a single case like this ever result in anything but circling the wagons against the host population.
