Thailand was the poster child of Asian growth: three decades of rising incomes, an 800% stock rally, slums replaced by skyscrapers. Then George Soros tore it down in 1997.

The bedrock was a hard peg: $1 = ฿25, with no exceptions. Soros read that peg as a vulnerability. He mobilised his hedge funds and a pack of fellow speculators, shorted the baht into oblivion, and pocketed over $2 billion.

🕸 The rate trap

▪️Soros and his Quantum Fund orchestrated a massive short attack on the Thai baht, after they identified a fundamental weakness in Thailand's economy.

▪️Years of easy credit had fuelled a real estate bubble, with non-performing loans hitting 52.3%. The current account was $14 billion in the red. Short-term foreign debt accounted for 65% of total overseas borrowings, while central bank reserves could only cover 70.4% of that liability.

▪️ In January 1997, Soros and other hedge funds, including Julian Robertson's fund which bet $3 billion, began borrowing baht, dumping them for dollars, and waited for the currency to collapse.

▪️ In June alone, Soros's fund unloaded $10 million of baht in one trade. The Bank of Thailand counterattacked with $24 billion in reserves, reinforced by Singapore and Hong Kong. It wasn't nearly enough.

▪️The hedge funds used a two-pronged strategy; they sold baht forwards and on the spot market, while also spreading rumours that devaluation was imminent.

▪️The selling was immense; in a single day, the funds and their investment banks dumped ten times more baht than central banks could absorb.

▪️By late June, Thailand's reserves had dropped from $38.7 billion to just $2.85 billion. On 2 July 1997, the Bank of Thailand announced the float of the baht. The currency immediately lost half its value, falling down from 25 to 57 baht per $1.

▪️Thailand's GDP shrank by a devastating 10%, despite continuous high growth in previous years.

▪️The Thai baht collapse triggered a regional financial shock, spreading across Asia, hitting Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and South Korea, and crushing currencies: the baht fell 42%, the Indonesian rupiah 83%, and the Malaysian ringgit 39%.

▪️The IMF stepped in with a $40 billion "rescue" package for Thailand, South Korea, and Indonesia, with crippling conditions.

▪️The toll on ordinary people was brutal:

🎯 Two million jobs vanished; unemployment quadrupled from 1.5% to 4.4%.

The IPCC has nothing.

Forty years of civilizational alarm. Trillions of dollars redirected. Energy systems dismantled. Farmers crushed. Children taught to fear the sky. Political freedom surrendered. Reproductive choices second-guessed. Entire economies rewired.

For nothing.

There is no empirical finding underneath any of it. None. Not one measurement, standing on its own, that would move a reasonable person to alarm.

The entire structure is manufactured.

Ask for one item. True without a model. Significant without a redefinition. Measured without extrapolation. Able to stand alone and matter to a parent, a farmer, a shipowner, an engineer, a legislator.

The honest inventory is three measurements. Not one of them means anything by itself.

CO₂ rose from 315 to 425 ppm since 1958. Plants grew better. Nothing bad happened that follows from the number.

Humans emit about 10 GtC/yr from combustion. A flux figure. By itself it tells you nothing.

CO₂ absorbs infrared on known bands. Water vapor absorbs far more. A spectroscopic line is not a consequence.

That is it. The entire empirical pile. Three measurements. Zero significance.

Everything else they have told you is one of three tricks.

Model output passed off as observation. Climate sensitivity. Airborne fraction read as retention. Revelle-limited uptake. Millennial persistence. Attribution of warming to forcing. Catastrophic projection. None of this is measured. All of it is what model code returns when they turn its crank. Model output is the model's assumptions integrated forward. It is not testimony from nature. It never was.

Definitional sleight-of-hand. Global mean surface temperature called a physical quantity. It is not. It is an area-weighted arithmetic mean of intensive readings with no thermodynamic referent. The 44 percent ratio of annual growth to annual emission relabeled as an airborne fraction and sold as retention. It carries zero information about retention. Fossil "dominance" quietly redefined from "nearly all" to "a bare majority" so the claim survives data that killed the real version.

Extrapolation sold as measurement. Tide gauges spliced to altimetry and projected as acceleration. Local pH drift at a handful of stations generalized to a planetary crisis. Arctic ice loss broadcast while Antarctic stability is dropped. Retreating glaciers paraded. Advancing ones hidden.

Strip the models. Strip the redefinitions. Strip the extrapolations. The pile is empty.

This is the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

The civilizational emergency has no empirical content. It was built by running trivial measurements through model chains and definitional swaps until the output read as apocalypse. Then it was broadcast as settled science. Then dissent was criminalized. Then careers were destroyed. Then children were terrified. Then nations were restructured.

For nothing.

The emperor has no clothes.
The pile is empty.
The alarm is a fabrication.
The greatest lie ever told to the human species was told in the name of saving the planet from a trace gas that feeds every green thing that lives.

That is the headline.
That is the story.
That is what you were never supposed to notice.

Martin Visser: Nederlandse spaarder draait straks op voor Franse financiële crisis

Het ging er tijdens de Financiële Beschouwingen amper over. Minister Eelco Heinen van Financiën refereerde slechts kort aan de politieke problemen in Frankrijk. Zijn Franse collega zit in eenzelfde klem als hij: oplopende rentelasten, een hoog begrotingstekort en een totaal gebrek aan politiek draagvlak om daarop in te grijpen.
Maar: in Frankrijk is de situatie vele malen erger dan bij ons. De staatsschuld is daar circa 120 procent van het bruto binnenlands product (bbp), bijna drie keer de onze. Het tekort op de begroting is ongeveer 6 procent, twee keer de onze. En de rentelasten op de Franse begroting zijn ongeveer even hoog als de uitgaven aan defensie of onderwijs. Zo ver is het bij ons gelukkig nog lang niet.
In de campagne voor een nieuwe Franse president staan radicaal-rechts (Marine Le Pen) en radicaal-links (Jean-Luc Mélenchon) er zeer goed voor. Le Pen kwam deze week met een groot bezuinigingsplan en stelde dat de Europese Centrale Bank daarbij een handje moet helpen om de rentelasten lager te krijgen. Mélenchons voorstellen zijn nog driester: hij wil dat de centrale bank Franse schulden kwijtscheldt. Tja, het kan altijd gekker.
Fransen weigeren in te grijpen in sociale zekerheid
Zij spreken het tenminste hardop uit. Reken maar dat de gevestigde politici er ook allang vanuit gaan dat de ECB klaarstaat om de financiële rotzooi in het land op te ruimen. De rente is inmiddels opgelopen naar bijna 5 procent. Zo duwen de rentelasten andere overheidsuitgaven aan de kant en loopt het tekort nog verder op. Ondertussen weigeren de Fransen in te grijpen in de sociale zekerheid, zoals de pensioenleeftijd.
De Franse politiek weet dat het nooit de Griekse behandeling gaat krijgen. Nee, Frankrijk is Frankrijk. Too big to fail. En dat weten ze. En dus zullen de Europese Commissie en de Europese Centrale Bank zich in allerlei bochten gaan wringen om uit te leggen waarom het logisch is dat de Fransen geholpen worden met soepelere begrotingsregels en financiële noodsteun.
In de tussentijd maken onze pensioenfondsen koersverlies op Franse staatsleningen. Zo’n 3,5 procent van ons pensioenvermogen is belegd in dit staatspapier. De Nederlandsche Bank wees onlangs al op deze kwetsbaarheid.
Spaarders dubbel gepakt
Zodra de ECB ingrijpt, bijvoorbeeld door Franse staatsleningen op te kopen, zal onherroepelijk de rente dalen. Dat jaagt de inflatie aan. Als je de eurozone inricht op de schuldenlanden, dan bestraf je spaarzaamheid. Wie spaart, wordt dubbel geraakt, zowel door die lagere rente als door de hogere inflatie. Dat staat nog los van eventuele Nederlandse garantstelling voor gelden die naar Parijs worden overgemaakt in de vorm van Europese steun of subsidies.
In Brussel zijn ze doodsbang dat Le Pen de verkiezingen gaat winnen. Alsof dat zoveel uitmaakt. Wat hebben de laatste presidenten daar nu voor elkaar gekregen? Ook bijna niets. Frankrijk stevent af op een groot ongeluk; wij moeten toekijken en straks betalen.
