Well you can identify who is the best in B03 format, but that is far from fulfilling as a player because consistency is much more difficult without the correct depth in format.
Would be like asking someone why they can't be consistent in a rock-paper-scissors tournament with 10,000 players.
But a fully drawn out battle between strategic minds takes longer. You really think a top level player has exhausted all their strategy after 3 quick matches? Trust me, they are just getting started.
Football is 90 mins, nba 48 minutes, rugby 80 mins, boxing 12 rounds etc. In esports, counter strike, dota and other traditional esports can literally be hours long per series because that's how long it takes to accurately match up.
With the large number of setups I saw at EVO we could have less casual stations and instead run top 32 as BO5 for example. Larger events than 32 man have managed BO5 before, its not like we don't know that this works. Same goes for Tekken, VF and all these fast paced fighters.
People love watching fighting games, so giving the fans more also supports viewership goals too. Anyone saying B05 is too long does not truly understand how to appreciate the game they are watching.
This is fine, maybe as talent we can try to incorporate a more viewer friendly experience with how we communicate what is happening in the game. Viewers also need to make effort to learn the basics so they can be a part of it from their own understanding.
I never heard anyone saying football should be 30 mins total, cos 90 is too long. Because when you're a true fan of something/someone, you want more. I've never seen a band get booed during their encore cos the true fans want more. Fighting games are no different.
It's possible that pubdevs have their own ideas on what format is best so we have to take what they give us I guess. Also longer tournaments means more work for TO's, more money, more time, etc. So that's also something to think about.
