Callan Clancy was only 8 months old.
On January 24, 2023, his mother strangled him and his two siblings with exercise bands. Cora, 5, and Dawson, 3, died that night.
But Callan survived long enough to be taken to the hospital.
He arrived at the Plymouth ER in cardiac arrest. Doctors fought to save him. They gave him epinephrine, restarted his heart, intubated him, continued CPR, and flew him to Boston Children’s Hospital.
His heart was beating, but his brain had suffered catastrophic damage.
His Glasgow Coma Scale score remained a 3, the lowest possible score. His pupils were fixed and dilated. There was massive swelling in his brain from oxygen deprivation. Ligature marks remained around his neck.
Doctors performed the brain death protocol twice, 24 hours apart.
Callan never breathed on his own.
He never responded.
On January 27, after his father was consulted, life support was withdrawn. Callan was pronounced dead at 11:18 a.m.
His heart continued beating for three days.
His brain never recovered.
Callan was 8 months old.
That is why there was a third murder charge.
Three days on machines. Three days while doctors fought for a baby who never got another chance.
I am still saying it, and this is coming from someone who finds physics fascinating: medicine is way beyond anything engineering will ever accomplish.
An aircraft is a mighty feat. We designed it. A space rocket? We designed it. Electromagnetic technology, bridges, computers, all of these are incredible feats, but ultimately things we designed and built from the ground up.
Now think about medicine. Humans are opening up a body they did not design, navigating structures they did not create, knowing what to cut, what not to touch, what connects to what, where something needs to go and what carries it there and then putting the whole thing back together.
That is, and will probably forever remain, mightier to me than anything we have ever achieved as engineers.
