@ofthedso she plates the food carefully, focused on
the task for a second too long before
glancing sideways at him again.
“…so if it sucks, you’re legally required to lie
to me.”

@ofthedso lifting the pan from the stove, she finally
relents with a small sigh. “it’s chicken
parmesan,” katherine says quietly.
“my mom used to make it when things
were…” she trails off briefly, shrugging one
shoulder. “good, i guess. figured i
remembered enough to try.”

she reaches over, fingers tapping lightly
against the side of the empty glass before
pulling it away from him like she’s claiming
a prize.
“yeah,” kat says, leaning her shoulder
back into his again. “kinda happy, actually.”
that finally does it.
the corner of katherine’s mouth lifts into
a small smile she doesn’t bother hiding this
time.
her eyes flick to the empty glass, then back
to him.
“look at that,” she murmurs, soft with
mock surprise. “he survives hydration.”
( + )
“and yeah,” kat adds, glancing past him
toward the burning remains of the
creature. “it worked out.”
her eyes flick back to him.
“doesn’t mean i enjoyed watching you
stand there like you were trying to get
yourself killed.”
katherine just stares at him for a second
from where she’s still half-sprawled
against the cracked pavement, smoke
curling through the air behind him.
then she lets out a sharp breath that’s
almost a laugh.
( + )
“you are unbelievably annoying,” she
mutters, pushing herself upright with a
wince.
her hand finally slips from his arm,
though not before giving it one last firm
squeeze like she had to make sure he
was actually there.
( + )
she doesn’t soften at the edges the way
most people would. no careful tone. no
pity in her eyes. no “hey, it’s okay” wrapped
up in something gentle and fragile.
she watches him take the second sip,
catches the way his grip tightens around
the glass like it offended him.
( + )
her elbow props against the bar, chin resting
lightly in her hand as she watches him out
of the corner of her eye.
“real inspiring pace you’ve got going,” she
adds, tone dry but warm underneath it.
“at this rate, you’ll be functional by next
week.”
( + )
“…i know,” she murmurs, voice low, almost
thoughtful. “just not what i’m interested
in right now.”
her eyes flick back up to his, steady again,
but there’s no teasing edge left to hide
behind this time.
just intent.
her breath hitches at that, at the way his
hands come up, the way he steadies her
like that, like he’s not letting her slip out
of this moment.
then he says that.
“…mm,” katherine hums quietly, like
she’s considering it.
( + )
her gaze does lift, just briefly, meeting his
eyes like he asked, long enough to make
it count.
then it drops again.
her hand shifts against his chest, fingers
curling slightly in the fabric like she’s
testing the space between them, like she’s
deciding something.
