There's a stretch of land in Montana biologists call "the place where grizzlies go to die." This is why the two largest remaining grizzly populations still can't reach each other, after 50 YEARS of trying.

Think about that for a second. Fifty years. These bears live in two separate pockets now, one around Glacier, one around Yellowstone, now as close as 47 miles apart. The corridors that should connect them run straight through Missoula, Butte, Helena, Bozeman, some of Montana's fastest growing cities.

So instead of reaching each other, bears trying to make that crossing get hit on highways, shot near cattle, or just never make it. In 2021, one did wander east from Glacier's population. It was caught and killed near cattle before it ever got close to Yellowstone's bears.

Fifty years of research, and not one single confirmed case of a bear making that crossing and breeding with the other population. Not one. Wildlife biologist Trevor Bloom put it plainly in a PBS Nature documentary: "The argument for keeping them on the list is that we're not seeing any gene flow between the distinct populations... Recovery, in many people's opinion, would be defined by when those two populations can interbreed."

This isn't hypothetical. In 2017, the last time Yellowstone grizzlies were briefly delisted, Wyoming issued 22 hunting tags almost immediately. Idaho issued one. The hunt never happened, a federal judge blocked it days before the season opened, and protections were reinstated in court. But it came within days of going through.

Think about what that could mean. A mother grizzly's territory spans hundreds of square miles, far beyond any park boundary. She doesn't know where the invisible line is. If she wanders out looking for food and gets shot legally because she stepped outside it, her cubs are left orphaned. Most orphaned cubs either die on their own in the wild, get sent to a zoo where they can never be released back into nature, or are euthanized outright because there's nowhere else for them to go.

It's already happening. Grizzly 964, one of Grizzly 399's own cubs, was killed in Montana this June, reportedly over a single cow. There are 86 million cattle in this country. There were roughly 2,300 grizzly bears left in the entire lower 48. Her two cubs, Scout and Ranger, 399's own grandchildren, were sent to a Colorado zoo. They'll never see the wild again.

This makes me furious. The entire point of the Endangered Species Act is recovery, THEN delisting. These bears haven't recovered. They're stuck. They're bottlenecked.

Congress already tried to delist Yellowstone's grizzlies by law, with a provision blocking anyone from suing to stop it, something courts have used twice before to reverse premature delisting. It passed committee last year. It's been sitting there since.

Who's pushing hardest for this? Ranchers and hunting groups. And once states take over, Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho have already said they'd allow hunting. Even a beloved bear wouldn't be safe from that shi$.

Grizzly 399 was the most famous bear in the world. Decades of survival, dozens of cubs raised, millions of people who loved her. In the end, none of that saved her from a highway. If roads can take a bear that famous, what chance do the rest have, unless we actually carve out a way through.

That's the real question. Not whether these bears deserve protection. Whether we're willing to carve out the one thing that would actually save them: a way to reach each other.

A British writer penned the best description of Donald Trump I’ve ever read:

“Why do some British people not like Donald Trump?”

A few things spring to mind. Trump lacks certain qualities which the British traditionally esteem. For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour and no grace – all qualities, funnily enough, with which his predecessor Mr. Obama was generously blessed. So for us, the stark contrast does rather throw Trump’s limitations into embarrassingly sharp relief.

Plus, we like a laugh. And while Trump may be laughable, he has never once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing – not once, ever. I don’t say that rhetorically, I mean it quite literally: not once, not ever. And that fact is particularly disturbing to the British sensibility – for us, to lack humour is almost inhuman. But with Trump, it’s a fact. He doesn’t even seem to understand what a joke is – his idea of a joke is a crass comment, an illiterate insult, a casual act of cruelty.

Trump is a troll. And like all trolls, he is never funny and he never laughs; he only crows or jeers. And scarily, he doesn’t just talk in crude, witless insults – he actually thinks in them. His mind is a simple bot-like algorithm of petty prejudices and knee-jerk nastiness.

There is never any under-layer of irony, complexity, nuance or depth. It’s all surface. Some Americans might see this as refreshingly upfront. Well, we don’t. We see it as having no inner world, no soul. And in Britain we traditionally side with David, not Goliath. All our heroes are plucky underdogs: Robin Hood, Dick Whittington, Oliver Twist. Trump is neither plucky, nor an underdog. He is the exact opposite of that. He’s not even a spoiled rich-boy, or a greedy fat-cat. He’s more a fat white slug. A Jabba the Hutt of privilege.

And worse, he is that most unforgivable of all things to the British: a bully. That is, except when he is among bullies; then he suddenly transforms into a snivelling sidekick instead. There are unspoken rules to this stuff – the Queensberry rules of basic decency – and he breaks them all. He punches downwards – which a gentleman should, would, could never do – and every blow he aims is below the belt. He particularly likes to kick the vulnerable or voiceless – and he kicks them when they are down.

So the fact that a significant minority – perhaps a third – of Americans look at what he does, listen to what he says, and then think ‘Yeah, he seems like my kind of guy’ is a matter of some confusion and no little distress to British people, given that:

• Americans are supposed to be nicer than us, and mostly are.

• You don’t need a particularly keen eye for detail to spot a few flaws in the man.

This last point is what especially confuses and dismays British people, and many other people too; his faults seem pretty bloody hard to miss. After all, it’s impossible to read a single tweet, or hear him speak a sentence or two, without staring deep into the abyss. He turns being artless into an art form; he is a Picasso of pettiness; a Shakespeare of shit. His faults are fractal: even his flaws have flaws, and so on ad infinitum.

God knows there have always been stupid people in the world, and plenty of nasty people too. But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid. He makes Nixon look trustworthy and George W look smart. In fact, if Frankenstein decided to make a monster assembled entirely from human flaws – he would make a Trump.

And a remorseful Doctor Frankenstein would clutch out big clumpfuls of hair and scream in anguish: ‘My God… what… have… I… created?' If being a twat was a TV show, Trump would be the boxed set.”

Let me introduce you to a brave hero from my country, Iran.

She was 16 years old. Just a girl. And on the streets of Iran, she did something braver than most people do in a lifetime: she took off her hijab and burned it in public. Right in front of the regime. Right in front of the world.

Now ask yourself: How many women in the West know her name? How many know what she risked for a freedom they have never had to fight for?

A 24-year-old PhD student spent two years sledgehammering poles into a field outside Cambridge to build a radio telescope, then had to read what it printed out.

It produced about 100 feet of chart paper a day. She went through it by hand, looking for patterns in ink.

In November 1967 she found what she called a bit of scruff. A quarter of an inch of squiggle on a roll of paper, in a signal she described as one part in ten million.

Her supervisor said it was interference. She kept going anyway, partly because she was convinced she was not good enough to be there and would be found out. So she checked everything.

The scruff came back, on schedule, pulsing every 1.337 seconds from a fixed point in the sky. Then she found three more.

Jocelyn Bell Burnell had discovered pulsars, the collapsed cores of dead stars, spinning fast enough to sweep a beam of radio waves past the earth like a lighthouse. Nothing known could produce a signal that regular, and for a while they seriously wondered about aliens.

The 1974 Nobel Prize went to her supervisor. She was not on it.

She has been asked about it for fifty years and has never once been bitter in public, saying students were simply not recognised in those days.

In 2018 she was given a special prize worth about 2.3 million pounds for the discovery. She gave every penny of it away, to fund physics PhDs for people who do not usually get them.

A recent economics paper literally titled "No country for old men" found that in autocracies, every additional year a dictator ages cuts economic growth by about 0.12%.

That means the older an autocrat gets, the worse off their people become.

Trump has made it clear he wants to rule-not govern-beyond his time. He talks about ending term limits, jailing opponents, and installing loyalists to keep him in power indefinitely.

That's not democracy.

In 1953, a 78-year-old widow walked into a struggling Massachusetts laboratory and essentially told a scientist: develop the birth control pill. I’ll pay for it.

Her name was Katharine Dexter McCormick.

Decades earlier, McCormick had been one of the few women studying biology at MIT. She even fought the university over its requirement that women wear hats in laboratories, arguing, correctly, that feathers and loose fabric near open flames were dangerous.

Then she married into one of America’s great fortunes.

Her husband, Stanley McCormick, heir to the International Harvester fortune, developed severe mental illness early in their marriage. Katharine decided not to have children, and contraception became intensely personal.

She became a suffragist, joined Margaret Sanger’s birth control movement and did something considerably more daring: she smuggled diaphragms from Europe into the United States, where contraception remained heavily restricted.

But her biggest gamble came later.

Margaret Sanger had spent years dreaming of a contraceptive women could control themselves. Scientist Gregory Pincus believed hormones might make it possible, but his research was running out of money.

McCormick arrived.

After meeting Pincus in 1953, she immediately wrote him a check for $40,000 and promised more. She ultimately supplied nearly all the private funding needed to push the research forward.

This was not passive philanthropy. McCormick monitored the scientists, demanded results and even moved to Boston to stay close to the work.

In 1960, the FDA approved the first oral contraceptive.

The scientists became famous. The Pill changed sex, marriage, work and women’s ability to control when, or whether, they became mothers.

Katharine McCormick had helped pay for the revolution.

When she died in 1967 at 92, no major newspaper published her obituary.
