"not until
today, did I begin to feel
grateful for my good fortune....
as when someone on the other side of the world,
or the city, is struck in my name, I do not feel it."

"which tools repair the aging dog, the wilting snake plant, the crow’s feet under my eyes, the stiff knee or bad back." @KarlaCordero#PoemADay https://t.co/gVKEVQBJ49
"Collectively, state governments will have budget shortfalls of $312 billion through the summer of 2022, according to a review by Moody’s Analytics. When local governments are factored in, the shortfall rises to $500 billion."

“white supremacy and ideas about the sanctity of private property came together to mandate a compromise designed to end slavery [in pennsylvania], but to do so with the least amount of disruption to slave owners’ lives.” pg 457 #TheHemingsesofMonticello
sixteen pages in and this depiction of jefferson’s farm book as a workaday document and record of oppression - “oh the responsibilities i have! here is what i have done and have yet to do for all ‘my family.’” #TheHemingsesofMonticello
i can’t stop thinking of this.

on my lunchtime run through empty industrial neighborhoods, i approached a bridge and a man on the other side. we both stopped, pulled on our masks, and proceeded, pausing to wave and nod to each other at the mid-point. it's good to feel cared for.
one of the great EJ Josey quotes that @rchancell includes in her biography: "We care more about intellectual freedom than we do about human freedom or human aspirations."
been thinking about that quote a lot. thanks for a great @BC_ALA session today at #ALAVirtual20
"Tech leaders have often pointed to a 'pipeline problem'...[but] the problem is not one of education but of access and support...when Black and Latino people do get in the door, they often find themselves looking for the exit before long."

@lisapeet1 one of my favorite books of last year. following @brywashing him on twitter has filled my reading list with great essays and stories he’s putting out right now.
@loidagarciafebo i'm using bike lanes (when there are no bikes), i'm taking alleyways, i'm taking advantage of empty street side parking - and everyone else just goes about their business like we're not all here to share these spaces.
"the couple insisting on running side by side down a narrow sidewalk, the dog walker thoughtlessly unspooling a long leash, the large family strolling four abreast"
all of these things i have cursed - and then i felt bad.
