Please include Stem-OTP visa. At Wharton for example tons of graduating international students get these and it allows them to work cheaply at the best companies and they can then apply multiple times for the HB1 while they continue to work in the US as an “intern”. No payroll tax or big salaries so international student are taken over US kids.
My son is a college senior and has white middle class friends with Computer Science Degree from places like Cornell and have send 100s of resumes and can’t get jobs. They are smart wonderful hardworking kids. Vivek needs to looks at some data from this years college graduating class. American kids don’t have jobs!
There is no question that focus on victimhood and ruminating on trauma has hurt the current generation’s progress. However, as our elite institutions favored diversity and international students, many middle and upper middle class families found the best most controllable way to get their children into elite institutions was through sports. Simple, academic achievement, even at the highest level no longer provided a fair playing field for a middle class or upper middle class white student to get into a competitive university. Vivek obviously doesn’t understand the hyper competitive sports pipeline that many parents have turned to which requires an immense amount of work and discipline over years for their children in order to give them a fair shot with more control in getting into the best academic institutions. This requires these kids to keep up an incredibly intense athletic schedule from a young age while also keeping their academic status high enough to meet at least the minimum standards to be a top recruit for sports. This is essentially the Tiger mom for white students . The Asian and Indian Tiger moms find more success in things like having their kids focus on Orchestra or Top math competitions, etc. DEI in academia college admissions has forced these stereotypes on families in America.

In speaking to younger American born people entering the Top investment banking, consulting, computer engineering companies etc, the largest portion of the workforce is NOT US citizens. HB Visa workers cannot easily switch jobs from the company that sponsored their visa. It is “golden handcuffs.” If they come from countries with weaker economies, they often send money back to family members that is substantially more than what can be earned in their origin country. If they lose their visa status, they would have to return to those countries, earn much less, if they can even get a job. So they have a lot more on the line and employers know that.
But this sets up a chain of disadvantage for the USA by not hiring US citizens. More money leaves the US economy to other countries, it traps US citizens into downward mobility that can have generational consequences, it disincentivizes merit in competitive fields, and often sends US citizens to feed elite universities by getting higher degrees like MBAs masters PHd in hopes of a better resume to get a job because doors have shut in their face in favor of HB visa holders.
