Given the sheer size of Rasmale, which is equivalent to the combined area of three reclaimed Hulhumale phases, it would be impossible to complete the reclamation, shore protection and the necessary utility infrastructure through public financing, not even within the next 20 years or so.

Borrowing foreign funds to develop it exclusively as a local residential area would also be impossible. No financial institution would lend billions of dollars to such a project given our current financial prospects.

Rasmale is so huge that a private tourism/residential zone aimed at tourists could perfectly coexist alongside a massive local residential area capable of accommodating a population of hundreds of thousands. Both could thrive together, creating massive economic opportunities.

With $350 billion worth of development projects under its belt and with 30 years of experience developing massive towns from scratch, I don’t think anyone in their right mind would question Emaar’s capacity to pull this project off.

If it weren’t for @MMuizzu, this lagoon could have been sold to a foreign investor to build a few resorts by reclaiming a handful of islands within that enormous lagoon, just as @ibusolih sold the vaavu Fohtheyo lagoon, the largest lagoon in the Maldives to @Amanresorts in 2023 for peanuts. That wouldn’t transform our economy or forever change our lives for the better in the way this $20 billion investment from Emaar could. Political difference aside I think we should all support this project which has the potential to transform the lives of generations ahead.
