"Some hope that Trump’s previous interactions with the U.N. suggest he may not be as hostile to the organization as he seems in public."

With a second Trump term looming, concerns are rising over the future of the U.N. and multilateralism, Stéphanie Fillion writes. https://t.co/Rd9TswYEBh
"As the race for the next secretary-general heats up, it is likely that history, of trading influence and power for votes for a spot at the top, is “highly likely” given “past practices,” @benaldson said in a phone interview."

President Trump was growing increasingly impatient with Israel's actions in Lebanon, reflecting recent tensions between the two countries. Hezbollah's exclusion from the negotiations was unsurprising because the United States would not negotiate with the group. However, its absence conveniently gives both Israel and Lebanon a scapegoat for not respecting the agreement, making it a key weakness that could provide both sides with an easy way out in the future: Stephanie Fillion, Editor in Chief, Envoy Magazine

This interview is creating discomfort and highlights a legitimate question that is being raised in UN circles about whether it is appropriate for Mr. Grossi to continue doing his job as director general of the IAEA while running for UNSG job. The job, as in this case, gives him a platform to advertise his candidacy and use his job to have an advantage over the other candidates. The Costa Rica candidate, Rebecca Grynspan, head of UNCTAD, another UN high level official, resigned her job to run for UNSG. Diplomats are arguing that all candidates should resign their UN jobs otherwise this gives them undue access, and unfair advantage over other candidates @FareedZakaria . Mr. Crossi should have been asked this question.
The U.N. General Assembly has adopted a draft resolution that unequivocally condemns the trafficking of enslaved Africans and the transatlantic slave trade as the most inhumane and enduring injustice against humanity.
123 in favour
3 Against (USA, Israel, Argentina)
52 abstentions
The resolution also seeks to recognize the profound and lasting impacts of the abhorrent regimes of slavery and colonialism and emphasizes that claims for reparations represent a concrete step towards remedying historical wrongs against Africans and people of African descent.

Argentina has formally nominated @rafaelmgrossi to be the next U.N. Secretary-General. He is officially the first candidate in the race to succeed @antonioguterres on Jan. 1, 2027 - https://t.co/F3fsODBCZW

@Fillionsteph10 another interesting angle is that the US make up the highest number of UN staff as a percentage by country. The US, different to most other countries, tax their citizen UN employees, the burden of which is carried by all UN staff who offset this through their pay.
The US should not be allowed to have its cake and eat it too. Be careful what you wish for is what I'd warn. UN operating costs, a massive US gripe, could certainly be reduced by relocating its HQ from NY. https://t.co/cwRjNJPzfg
After the #UNSC meeting on the drone Incursion into Poland, @PolandMFA Sec. of State @MarcinBosacki said of #Russia:
"I'm hoping for the best, but I'm being realistic. I think it was very important what the representative of the US administration said that since the start of the #Alaska talks, exactly a month ago, we see escalation by Russia, not any signs of de-escalation."
@USUN said at the meeting: "Since the Alaska summit between President Trump and President Putin on August 15th, Russia has intensified its bombing campaign against Ukraine, resulting in loss of life and damage to civilian infrastructure."

The revised list of speakers for #UNGA80 is out — and it confirms what many expected:
#Russia, #China, and #India's leaders do not plan to come, despite an earlier draft that suggested higher-level participation from New Delhi.
As announced earlier this month, # U.S. President #Trump will speak on Tuesday, alongside France's President #Macron.
The UK's prime minister Keir Starmer will speak later in the week. Both #France & the UK have pledged to recognize the State of #Palestine during the event, alongside Canada and Belgium. Somehow, Canada's prime minister is not listed for the high-level debate, but that does not mean he will skip the two-state solution conference.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr #Zelensky is set to address the Assembly on Wednesday morning, and Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will take the podium on Friday. Palestine is still listed at the presidential level, even if the Trump administration vowed not to issue visas to the delegation.
Who are you most interested in hearing from at this year’s #UNGA?
"Often deemed the hardest role in the world, the job description includes nothing less than shepherding a solution to climate change or mitigating the threat of Artificial Intelligence. This while also trying to maintain peace in the world. And whoever wins the top job will also inherit an institution that is not only politically frozen but also in serious financial trouble."

The @StateDept just announced it is “denying and revoking visas from members of the Palestine Liberation Organization (#PLO) and the Palestinian Authority (#PA) ahead of the upcoming #UNGA80
The move goes against the UN Headquarters Agreement which says that as host, the U.S. must not impede transit to UNHQ for “representatives of Members” and “other persons invited…on official business,” must apply these rules regardless of bilateral relations, and must grant required visas promptly. Denying entry to UN-accredited delegates cuts against that framework.
@USUN & @panamaonuny have shared a draft resolution with the #UNSC today to create a new "Gang Supression Force," which would establish a "UN Support Office" to provide logistical support to efforts on the ground in #Haiti.
According to Amb. Dorothy Shea. "This will ensure the mission has the tools at its disposal to take the fight to the gangs and ensure that the Haitian state can meet the foundational needs of its people."
Hard to find superlatives to convey the world-altering state of today's geopolitics expressed by this vote. The US voting alongside Russia, Belarus, Eritrea, Mali, North Korea, Nicaragua against a resolution condemning Russian invasion of Ukraine. Even Cuba and China abstained.
