It was 2008.
What later became known as the great financial crisis was just getting started.
My career at Lehman Brothers came to an abrupt end.
The stock market was crashing.
The housing market was in a free fall.
I was in my mid 30s and thought the world was coming to an end.
Literally...
In a panic, I sold our big house.
I had already exited the stock market.
I purchased an irrational amount of physical gold and silver.
Honestly, I was hunkered down and consumed with doom and gloom.
I had decided to play defense.
It was the wrong decision.
This week, the insufferable political commentators and market prognosticators are filling the air waves and social media feeds with clickbait and nonsense.
Fear sells...it gets views...and...
Fear also leads to bad long term outcomes.
The winners of the next cycle will be focused on what is important during any economic or market downturn...
Putting the offense on the field...being aggressive while others are scared.
Your competition is most likely starting to worry and develop a scarcity mindset, it is human nature.
This is where you can be of the most value to your clients and grow your business exponentially.
Here are some suggestions for this weekend/next week:
☑️Call all your A Clients.
☑️Call any former A Clients and 'check in on them.'
☑️Call all your top prospects and offer a complimentary 'Stress Test.'
☑️If you are running ad campaigns, increase the spend.
If I had this mindset in 2008 instead of a defensive approach, I know things would have moved quicker for me professionally.
Let's put the offense on the field while our competitors are playing scared.

Do you know industry conference legend Garbanzo from Advisor AI Partners?
I asked for an interview at @FutureProof_HQ next week in Miami.
He said, 'Forget that, I am picking you up at the airport and I am your co-host next week dude!'
He can be very demanding.
And apparently I talk to dogs now.

The great @Convertbond breaks down his allocation for the rest of the 2020's:
💵 10% Cash
📈 40% Stocks
📉 30% Bonds
🌾 20% Commodities
📉 Inflation + rising rates = bonds struggling, commodities rising.

7x Super Bowl Champion. 5x Super Bowl MVP. 3x NFL MVP.
The list goes on... and on. He’s the undisputed NFL G.O.A.T., which is hard for a Peyton Manning fan like myself to admit.
But here’s something about @TomBrady that’s often overlooked: his obsession with sleep.
In fact, data shows up to 70 million Americans are not getting enough sleep regularly. The CDC even calls it a public health epidemic. Sleep deprivation can impact everything from hormone levels to heart health—aging a man's testosterone levels by a decade.
And the consequences of poor sleep don’t stop there:
➡️Increased diabetes risk: Sleep deprivation mimics insulin resistance, making it harder for your body to convert glucose into energy.
➡️Higher blood pressure: Chronic lack of sleep disrupts stress hormones, leading to high blood pressure.
➡️Cognitive decline: Missing out on just a few hours of sleep impairs memory, concentration, and decision-making skills.
➡️Weakened immunity: Your body can’t fight off illness as effectively, and recovery slows.
➡️Heart disease risk: Poor sleep keeps your heart from getting the restoration it needs, leading to long-term cardiovascular problems.
➡️Weight gain: According to the NIH, short sleepers consume 500 more calories a day on average.
What does this have to do with Tom Brady?
Brady isn’t just the G.O.A.T. because of his game-day performance.
He prioritizes sleep to fuel his high-performance life.
Even after retiring from the NFL, Brady sticks to a strict routine: a mandatory 9 hours of sleep, with a bedtime of 8:30 p.m. and a wake-up time of 5:30 a.m.
That discipline isn’t just for game day—it’s for every day.
Getting enough sleep helps you:
➡️Get sick less often
➡️Maintain a healthy weight
➡️Reduce stress and improve your mood
➡️Lower your risk of chronic conditions like Type 2 ➡️diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure
➡️Sharpen your focus and memory for better performance
Brady knew that to compete at the highest level, sleep couldn’t be compromised.
The same is true for us—whether you’re chasing a Super Bowl ring, running a business, or just trying to show up as your best self.
Tips to improve your sleep:
➡️Stick to a consistent sleep schedule
➡️Make your bedroom cool, quiet, and relaxing
➡️Turn off screens 30 minutes before bed
➡️Avoid caffeine and heavy meals in the evening
➡️Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy diet
A framework for better sleep: QQRT
The QQRT formula for sleep is a method used to improve sleep quality and is based on four key principles:
Quantity (Q) – The number of hours you sleep. The goal is to ensure you get enough sleep, typically 7-9 hours for adults.
Quality (Q) – How well you sleep. This focuses on achieving deep, restful sleep, free from disturbances like waking up frequently.
Regularity (R) – Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule. Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day helps regulate your circadian rhythm.
Timing (T) – The time you go to sleep. It's important to align sleep with natural circadian patterns, usually aiming to fall asleep earlier in the evening and wake up in the morning.
This approach aims to not only prioritize getting enough sleep but also enhancing its restorative benefits.
So, maybe we can’t all be the G.O.A.T. on the field, but we can take a page out of Brady’s playbook and prioritize sleep for our own high-performance goals.

The Saturday Note: The Loneliness Epidemic
51% of GenX and Millennials report being lonely.
70% of GenZ report being lonely.
The physical implications are the same as smoking 15 cigarettes per day!
It is twice as lethal as obesity.
Why is this happening?
Death is an uncomfortable subject.
Death is also undefeated.
We will all face it one day.
I think there is utility in thinking about it well before your final day.
@danielcrosby was on the @resilientadvsr Podcast recently and one of the topics from his new book The Soul of Wealth was about the work of Bronnie Ware.
She is a palliative care nurse who spent years listening to the reflections of her patients in their final days. As the game of life was coming to an end for the people she served, she paid attention to them.

The game was tied 49-49 with 2 seconds left on the clock.
My beloved Vols had lost 15 games in a row to the Nick Saban lead juggernaut Alabama program.
The annual Tennessee - Alabama game is known by fans as simply 'The 3rd Saturday in October.'
If you are not a college football fan I can not describe how much the outcome of this game means.
The kicker lined up for a game winning field goal attempt...making the field goal would send the 100,000 orange clad Tennessee fans into a state of absolute pandemonium.
15 years of heartbreak and frustration would be instantly forgotten.
The snap was good.
The kick went up...
From Augusta, GA to Greenville, SC...from Florida to East Tennessee and all of western North Carolina...people's lives are destroyed.
▶️I can't believe how little coverage the corporate media is giving to Hurricane Helene victims.
▶️I can't believe how little help the Federal government is providing to its own citizens.
▶️I am blown away at the citizen lead efforts to get help to the region.
This is not politics. This is life and death stuff!
For Financial Advisors, this is where your planning work with your clients really comes through.

Saturday Note: Monkeys & Beliefs
A group of monkeys were placed in a room with a ladder leading up to a bunch of bananas hanging from the ceiling.
Naturally, one monkey started to climb the ladder to reach the bananas.
However, as soon as he did, all the monkeys were sprayed with cold water.
This unpleasant experience led them to associate climbing the ladder with discomfort.
Soon, whenever a monkey attempted to climb the ladder, the others would pull him down to avoid being sprayed.
One by one, the monkeys were replaced with new ones.
Each new monkey, unaware of the cold water, would try to climb the ladder, only to be pulled down by the group.
Eventually, all the original monkeys were replaced.
None of the remaining monkeys had ever been sprayed with water, yet they continued to prevent any monkey from climbing the ladder.
They did so simply because "that's the way things have always been done."
This story illustrates how beliefs and behaviors can become deeply ingrained, often without us questioning their origin or validity.
Over time, we may adopt practices and hold onto beliefs that no longer serve us—or perhaps never did—simply because they are familiar or because "everyone else is doing it."
Some questions to consider:
▶️What existing beliefs am I holding onto without question?
▶️Are there "ladders" I'm avoiding because of an unfounded fear or outdated tradition?
▶️How might these entrenched beliefs be limiting my growth or the growth of those around me?
This week I had a chance to attend Chad Willardson's Platinum ELEVATED event where Olympian Ryan Miller shared this thought-provoking story.
