This is a simple explanation of WACC.

WACC stands for Weighted Average Cost of Capital.

In simple terms, WACC is the average cost a business incurs to raise money (capital) to finance its operations and growth.

Think of it this way:

Imagine you want to start a business and you need ₦10 million. You decide to raise the money from three different sources:

Bank Loan (Debt): ₦4 million
Your own money or investors' money (Equity): ₦5 million
Preference Shares: ₦1 million

Each source of funding has a cost:

The bank charges 12% interest on the loan. (Tax Deductible)
Equity investors expect a 20% return because they are taking more risk.
Preference shareholders expect a 10% dividend.

Now, you can't simply average 12%, 20%, and 10% because you didn't raise the same amount from each source. You raised more from equity than from preference shares.

Instead, each cost is weighted based on how much of the total capital it represents.

It was before, I used to held the opinion that ICAN should restrict the criteria for writing the exam. But on the other hand when I see the fluidity it gives, and the opportunity it creates for people from other career path. I just had to agree with ICAN.
