It seems to be an excellent measure of a player's career when it comes to things like HoF voting, since it kind of bridges the whole traditional vs. New-age stat issues.

It's a metric to weigh a player's value within his own playing era in order to compare their value to another player's value in a different era. But it in no way compares those players TO each other.

Varsho is a defensive reolacement/pinch runner in the 90's, and Carter is a platoon player/DH today, based on their eras style of play.

Carter played in a more traditional, put the ball in play era that rewarded run production. Varsho plays in the new, on-base at any cost mentality.

Not to mention the PED era Carter played in.

Varsho's WAR value is based on the lack of elite defensive replacements at his position. Carter's is based on the the opposite problem. WAR favors an elite skill set over a balanced one.
