What could decisive leadership do for a country?

In 1987, India was just two years behind the latest chip manufacturing technology. Yet decades of squandered opportunities pushed us twelve generations behind. In the 1960s, at the dawn of the silicon revolution, Fairchild Semiconductor sought to build a fab in India, but the then bureaucracy drove them to Malaysia.

In the 1980s, IISc’s Prof. A.R. Vasudeva Murthy helped establish Metkem Silicon Limited. But without the promised subsidised power, it collapsed. At Chandigarh, Semiconductor Complex Ltd began in 1984 with a 5,000 nm process and swiftly advanced to 800 nm, then the global cutting edge. Neither China nor Taiwan had entered the fab space. Yet, a devastating fire in 1989 gutted the plant, leaving it crippled for decades.

In mid-2005, a major multinational semiconductor company began operations in South India, hired seasoned experts, and established a cleanroom. Equipment imported from the US was stuck at the port for several months due to high import duties. With no government relief, the project packed up for China. India’s cleanroom was sold as scrap.

We began our semiconductor journey when the world started producing the 12th-generation 2-nanometer chip.

Under the able leadership of our Hon PM Thiru @narendramodi avl, India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) was launched in December 2021 with an outlay of ₹76,000 crore.

The initiative has already attracted ₹1.5 Lakh Crores in investments from major players. India may have been a late entrant into the global semiconductor race, but its ambitions are as expansive as they are achievable. India is expected to have a Semiconductor market share of 20-25% by 2047.

A story of squandered chances is finally being rewritten into one of strength, resolve, and resurgence. Thanks to our Hon PM’s vision!

'Annamalai was welcomed with a short Vedic recital. And all were elders who were chanting his name and Modi’s. He was moved. He became very emotional after about 2 minutes into his speech. He never asked for vote. He said “I have come here to meet you all and seek your blessings.” All throughout he had tears. Everyone went to stage to shower rose petals and akshathai.'
