On June 13, 2026, LAPD responded to calls about a woman screaming at an apartment complex on Jordan Avenue in Canoga Park, California, and found Marie Marseille, a New York native, celebrating the New York Knicks’ NBA Championship. When the door briefly opened, officers encountered her 2-year-old Goldendoodle Jameson, who was wearing a New York Knicks shirt, and one officer shot and killed him.
Shoot first. Think never.
Jameson was not a criminal suspect or a threat. He was a beloved family member whose death has sparked outrage and demands for LAPD to release body camera footage and explain why lethal force was used on a family pet during a noise complaint. Fourteen officers were dispatched to a Black woman’s celebration, and only Jameson did not make it home.
If officers cannot distinguish between a genuine threat and a wagging tail, then improved de-escalation and canine-encounter training are not optional; they are urgent.
This family deserves justice, transparency, and accountability. Jameson deserved better.
