Why only French people travel to random countries like Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Oman, Namibia, Rwanda, etc...
Go to any of them and you’ll notice that a disproportionate share of the tourists are French: a 25yo couple travelling after one TikTok convinced them the country was underrated. A family of five in a campervan. Four friends crossing the desert for a challenge nobody asked them to do.
There’s no obvious reason for it. Those countries aren’t closer to France. French people aren’t richer than Americans, Dutch, Germans or Brits. Yes, they have loads of holidays, but not much more than others, and anyway everyone has time for a 7-day road trip.
My theory is that travelling to obscure places carries a particular type of status in France. Being a “voyageur” is culturally superior to being a tourist. The less obvious and convenient the destination, the more the trip says about your curiosity, openness and sense of adventure. Kazakhstan says something about who you are. A week in Greece or Spain just says you wanted a holiday.
This sentence by Dostoyevsky never fails to hit hard:
“You sensed that you should be following a different path, a more ambitious one, you felt that you were destined for other things but you had no idea how to achieve them and in your misery you began to hate everything around you.”
Life hack: start leaving your phone at home. Often. As a default. Go to the gym without it. Go to dinner without it. Take a walk without it. Go to a museum without it. At first, you will start to come up with justifications for why you can’t do this. But once you overcome them, you will start to experience a wonderful mix of creativity & happiness as you unshackle yourself from your handheld dopamine casino.
If you’re 25-30 and you think you’re way way smarter than your management chain at a medium/large company, you should go found a company. Otherwise you are either a liar or a coward.
Rich people pay for expensive gyms and services not because they're dumb, but because they don't want to be around regular people.
Price is a simple filtering mechanism.

Don't worry about it. The Chinese also invented gunpowder, and then literally didn't invent guns because they were using it for fireworks. They love fireworks. They will always use technology for fireworks. They can't help themselves.
