FIN is a soft shark on a mission to spread
awareness of the catastrophic decline in shark populations due to overfishing, finning, bycatch & more #KeepFinAlive
Once a ship sinks, where does its fuel go? Exactly. Marine pollution from sunken vessels is predicted to reach its highest level this decade, with 8,500+ shipwrecks at risk of leaking around 6 bn gallons of oil.

Scientists suggest we have entered a new geological epoch, the Anthropocene, the result of human impacts on climate stability.
A new book, edited by @ConservationOrg's social scientist @Mike_Mascia aims to offer insight on how to change this situation.

Wonderful nature:
The almost completely transparent Glass octopus (Vitreledonella richardi) rarely seen by human eyes because of the extreme depths at which it lives

It's National Ocean Month.
Take a moment to appreciate our not-so-cuddly ocean animals. They're important too.
Without sharks and other apex ocean predators, our ocean ecosystems would collapse.

We're so excited to be involved with @eoceans.
We're looking for partners along the South African coast for the Covid-19 project. It is key to gaining an understanding into how our oceans and coastal communities have been impacted by lockdown measures.

Plastic or Jellyfish?
We collected a lot of surface debris today, and it was tricky to identify between the clear plastic and the jellyfish. Both are in this clip.
Now we can understand why 100% turtles have plastic in their guts, according to @UniofExeter & @PlymouthMarine
Are you a Salty Sea Dog or a Little Buddy? Comment below and let us know what your scuba nickname is. Don't have one? No worries, we discovered what your diving buddies should call you below! #scuba#scubadiving
We completed our analysis of the debris we gathered during our Go Dive & @NAUIWorldwide Clean Ocean Divers workshop.
How much line do you think we got?
Scarily, it was a whopping 878 metres 😳
Plus 61 sinkers, 52 swivels, 36 hooks & more in 1 dive.

Shame to see this white shark. Apparently bycatch on a longline in Vietnam. longlines indiscriminately remove nontargeted fish stocks from our oceans resulting in the pointless death of #sharks and other species. Shared in our fb group.

Incredibly sad to see that some anglers have such disregard for life. This pyjama shark was tossed into the dunes on one of Mossel Bay's beaches, left for dead. It had hook marks in its jaw.
Instead of releasing it, someone decided it didn't deserve to live. Shameful.
The height of laziness and ignorance at Beacon Point, Mossel Bay.
I really hope the angler that was responsible for this one day understands how despicable this careless behaviour is. Fishing line can entangle, injure, and kill marine life.

Heed the warning, and remain vigilant.
Also understand that this was a very peaceful encounter with a white shark. It knew that these water users were not part of its diet.

Due to a high number of reported White Shark sightings and close encounters, NSRI are appealing to the public exercise caution along the Southern Cape coastline, in particular around the coastline of Plettenberg Bay and between Mossel Bay and Jeffreys Bay.
