A white shark tagged right here in Mossel Bay was killed on a drumline in KZN ๐
These outdated shark nets & drumlines have no place in modern conservation.
Time to switch to smarter, non-lethal solutions.

We've seen great white sharks disappear in South Africa; whether down to orcas or something else. What effects do we see when this apex predator is lost? Well, a recent study answered it ๐ฆ
Give it a read here: https://t.co/qcAne528nH
A tagged white shark just died on a drumline in a Marine Protected Area.
Outrage followed. But now we need action.
Please sign the petition to end lethal shark control in South Africa. Itโs time for science-backed, non-lethal alternatives.

A tagged white shark has died after being caught on a drum line managed by @KznSharks.
Thanks to Mongabay for covering this. I have written again to @DrDionGeorge to ask for an end to this deadly activity. Itโs time for science-based, non-lethal solutions https://t.co/haNLc2OP8a
@DrBladeNzimande maybe you can reason with @environmentza on this. Just read the research confirming @KZNSharksBoard responsible for highest white shark catches. It's ignorant to continue to use these methods.

A white shark tagged just weeks ago by Dr Alison Towner & Dr Alison Kock was just killed on a #drumline managed by @KZNSharksBoard. These outdated devices aren't mitigationโthey're execution.
@EnvironmentZA@DrDionGeorge our MPAs must protect, not destroy. We need urgent reform.

In Turkey, a seagull has learned to meow in order to get cat food
The unusual behavior of the bird was triggered by a nearby machine that dispenses food for stray animals.
The seagull stands by the device and "meows" to attract the attention of passersby. According to locals, it "subtly" hints that it would be nice to press the button and dispense a portion of food. As passersby joke, the seagull has figured out that being a cat is much more profitable.
So happy to share that my daughter Alba will be in COMPLETE REMISSION in March! ๐ Our 7.5-year cancer journey taught me that the health of our planet and our kids are deeply connected. It's time for a healthier future for our kids ๐๐ #CancerAwareness

Out today: my article for @guardian!
In 2017, 2 orcas started killing great white sharks in South Africa. Here's the whole story so far & how the effects could be a grim reflection of the future of sharks under the much bigger threat of overfishing! ๐ฆ

Honoured to be featured in @guardian's Age of Extinction series ๐ Thanks @CooperPalaeo for this thought-provoking article on Port & Starboard orcas, highlighting the trophic cascade caused by the disappearance of white sharks from #southafrica hot spots https://t.co/PbldSVQcE3

@SharkDevocean this shark was wrapped on a fishers line while he was targeting kob off the south coast of South Africa. Some of its dermal denticles came off (last pic). Thankfully it swam away strong, but I've been trying to ID it. Do you think it might be an Echinorhinidae? ๐ค
In case any fellow ๐ฆ nerds have missed this, we now have evidence of orcas solo-hunting white sharks in ๐ฟ๐ฆ! The culprit being Starboard of the infamous Port & Starboard duo. Excellent paper by @AlisonTowner1 et al, including fellow Scot @Shark_buff ๐ https://t.co/3IUwmotQ7b
