Plants don’t grow out of the soil. They grow out of the air. Roughly 90% of a plant’s dry weight is carbon and oxygen pulled from CO2. The classic willow-tree experiment showed a 5 lbs sapling becoming 169 lbs while the soil lost almost nothing.

5 pounds of willow. 200 pounds of soil. Five years of watering.

The tree ended up at 169 pounds. The soil had lost two ounces.

So where did the other 164 pounds of tree come from?

The air. 🌱

The oxygen you are breathing right now did not come from carbon dioxide.

A leaf takes in CO2 and water and gives off O2, so the obvious reading is that it strips the oxygen off the carbon dioxide and lets it go. That is not what happens. The oxygen comes from the water. The leaf tears H2O apart, keeps the hydrogen to build sugar, and vents the oxygen as waste.

We know because of an experiment in 1941. Ruben and Kamen fed plants water made with a heavy isotope of oxygen and watched which oxygen came back out. It matched the water. Feed the heavy isotope in as carbon dioxide instead and it never appears in the gas, because it stays behind in the sugar.

Every breath you have ever taken is plant exhaust. More precisely, it is water that a leaf ripped in half.

The problem? The pen is the size of a marker.
