@nickkokonas Hoping the democrats can swing that way. I think the current big left wing mistake boils down to trying to force equal outcomes rather than give (fairly) equal opportunities.
drives me crazy that people would rather let people steal cars en masse (and use those stolen cars to commit more crimes) than suffer the privacy indignity of...having your license plate identified on a public road in busy traffic that where everyone can already see it
@SukritGanesh A train to Mineral King and a small, densely developed town where the cabins are now would be great! Just as well the ski resort was axed, though. It’s much better as a hiking destination.
@Noahpinion what do you make of the UK Green Party recommending a circumcision ban? Surely a party captured by Islamists would not pursue such a policy?
A few weeks ago, my husband and I lost a pregnancy. The physical toll was something not even my doctor prepared me for.
The standard of care for women’s pain is medieval. We don’t need to agree on everything to agree this should be better.
I basically think the average voter is pretty wrong on:
1) Nuclear power (it's good)
2) Foreign aid (we spend very little on it and should spend more)
3) Climate change (a majority say they're not willing to have any additional amounts of their tax money spent on climate. The national average willingness to pay for things that help with climate is ~$300 per year)
4) Immigration (I think it's broadly good across the board, and definitely good to get more high skilled immigrants specifically)
5) Price controls in general (bad!)
I'd like governments to patiently nod along to voter concerns but quietly approve more nuclear, spend more on foreign aid, pay way more on climate, and allow at least more high skilled immigrants. I just flat out think it's wrong for politicians to have 1-1 similar views to the median voter and sometimes they need to diverge.
@sweatystartup As more and more people withdraw from caring about politics, your society starts to look like Russia, where people are deeply cynical and convinced that any other politicians will be just as bad as Putin.
@HeidiBachram@ZackPolanski@habibi_uk It seems, from an outside perspective, that for a lasting peace, Israelis must accept negotiating with “terrorists” and Palestinians must accept negotiating with “war criminals”. Bargouti in many ways seems like he’d be the least bad terrorist to negotiate with.
@SukritGanesh@TommyLundn Keep in mind that the Russians have a ton of AA assets protecting the Kerch bridge, for example, even while there is a ban on anything that explodes (like fuel!) being shipped over the bridge. Ukraine is also sending drones towards thousands of supply trucks on the land bridge.
I see your profile picture. That’s Johnny Cash. My hero too. Arrested seven times. Smuggled 668 amphetamines across the Mexican border in 1965. Took every drug there was and drank like I did. Cheated on his first wife. Slept with more woman than I ever did. Hit bottom in a cave in Tennessee in 1968 trying to crawl off and die. And then he got up. He got clean. He spent the rest of his life singing for prisoners and addicts and the people the country threw away because he knew he was one of them.
That was the whole point of the Man in Black. He wore it for the poor and the beaten down. He wore it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime. He wore it for the ones who never heard a word of Jesus. He wore it for the addicted and the dying. He wore it as a standing witness that no one is past saving.
You picked his picture. You did not pick his message. Try listening to the words.
@VlStarodubtsev@TheEconomist Freeze the rent aka price caps, so not liberal. I would argue that public grocery stores also are not liberal, because you’re interfering with an already very efficient market.
@UncleScottiepoo@groove_sdc Obviously “homo fascism” is the real issue here, but it’s crazy how he uses downtown San francisco as an example of car-culture and car-dependency. One of the easiest places in the country to get around without a car.
@CoreyWriting I think he has the right general idea, but his approach is wrong. American society will much better handle tons of job loss if we institute something akin to Norway’s sovereign wealth fund, but based on AI profits rather than oil.
@moseskagan@UnrigLA Doesn’t Brin think that Matt Mahan of all people is too far left? Sure, overall the Democrats have moved left, but Brin has also moved right, aligning in many ways with his MAGA girlfriend.
Platner’s disgusting and heinous behavior could perhaps be offset if he had accomplished anything in his entire life, but he hasn’t. He’s an astroturfed downwardly mobile failson who has demonstrated bad judgment and bad character his entire life.
