@ZoeWundenberg I'm so sorry Zoe, that's tough, and there's no one thing that works for everyone. I found what worked for me when I was grieving was to keep moving, grief can settle on you like a burden: walking, running, swimming can help 'shift' the load. And talking, talk to your peeps. xxx
What decade of 19C and where in Cork? In the first half of the century there weren't enough ordained priests to appoint to every parish. A remote/ poor parish may not have had resources to support a priest. Without a PP parishioners didn't have easy access to the sacraments.
@j_goddy I suspect this would be more of a folklore question. I've never found anything formally written down to explain this phenomenon. @FionaFitzsimons might know more. She's researched some of these traditions.
Congrats to the DYC Singers - Ireland's Choir of the Year 2024. Well done to all our young people performing - not forgetting the mammies and daddies, aunties and uncles and friends who've supported them during the year. #corkchoral#DublinYouthChoir
We have been aghast, as have many across Canada, with the racist and Islamophobic messages put forward by BC Post-Secondary Education Minister @selinarobinson.
Her suggestion Palestine was a “crappy piece of land with nothing on it” is horrendous, especially in the midst of ongoing war crimes where thousands of children have been killed in Gaza. It evokes the language of terra nullius, where the people of Palestine are imagined to be non-existent.
Her language is beyond offensive. Organizations across British Columbia are calling for her resignation, including organizations like the Canadian Association of University Teachers. It is hard for us to understand, given this comment amongst many others, how she can be expected to remain a Minister in Premier Eby’s cabinet.
We note that Premier @Dave_Eby has sent a comment sending a clear signal that Minister Robinson’s comments were wrong and unacceptable. Islamophobia is wrong. Anti-Palestinian racism is wrong. Minister Robinson has been engaged in a pattern of behaviour that is wildly unacceptable. Full stop.
We do note that we also find Minister Robinson’s “apology” to be woefully lacking, and contains no acknowledgment of Islamophobia or anti-Palestinian racism. We look forward to ongoing dialogue with the Premier’s office to understand what action steps will be undertaken to make things right.
Isn't it funny how some of the speakers have co-opted the language/ arguments of feminism- case in point, one speaker prefers to remain single-sex because boys can be educated without having to worry about what girls think of them🙃
In under 1 hour, we have sold over 350 tickets to our December concerts! Next week, we'll be releasing any remaining tickets to the general public. #WeAreDYC#lovechoral
Palestinian children in Gaza hold a press conference outside Al Shifa hospital, speaking English so the world cannot pretend not to understand them: “We come now to shout and invite you to protect us; we want to live, we want peace… we want to live as the other children live.”
Thanks Roisin, that's very kind of you. Ed was a one of a kind. Yes! Very well remembered about Will;-) He's taking this year pretty seriously, and hopes to get into music next year. I'll say we were talking, he'll probably find it very funny.
@FionaFitzsimons Thank you Fiona! I remember him speaking about you a lot - especially around the time of the course. Hope all is well with Will - trying to count up… a sixth year?!?

@roisingargan So sorry to hear your Uncle Ed died. He was one of my favourite students, and we stayed in touch years after He finished the course. Best wishes to your extended family.
Edmund Lynch delivered one of the Expert Workshops in Genealogy in 2019, when we were hosted in the Military History Archives. He got his narrative across to the audience, a born communicator. Rest in Peace, Ed.
