The Chairperson of the African Union Commission Congratulates the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia on Winning the Bid to Host COP32
Addis Ababa, 14 November 2025: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, congratulates the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia on its successful bid to host the 32nd Conference of the Parties (COP32) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
“The remarkable achievement reflects Africa's unwavering commitment to climate action and Ethiopia's longstanding leadership in advancing sustainable development on the continent,” the Chairperson said. “Under the leadership of H.E. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Ethiopia has championed bold climate initiatives — including its ambitious reforestation efforts and the Green Legacy programme — that continue to inspire action across Africa and beyond.”
He further noted that “Ethiopia has consistently demonstrated its capacity and experience in hosting major international summits, including the successful Africa Climate Summit, high-level global climate and development summits, and continental and regional conferences that benefit from the country’s strong institutional foundations and organisational excellence.”
As home to the African Union Headquarters and numerous international organisations, Addis Ababa stands as one of the world’s foremost diplomatic capitals and a centre of multilateralism. Its selection as the host city for COP32 “reaffirms its vital role in fostering global cooperation and dialogue on the most pressing issues of our time,” said the Chairperson.
The Chairperson added that the African Union Commission “looks forward to working closely with the Government of Ethiopia, the UNFCCC Secretariat, and all partners to ensure a successful, inclusive, and outcomes-driven COP32 that advances Africa’s climate priorities and strengthens global solidarity in the fight against climate change.”

Africa has spoken with one voice at the 2025 UN Climate Change Conference (COP 30) in Belém, Brazil and the world has listened. Ethiopia extends its heartfelt gratitude to the African Group of Negotiators for their unanimous endorsement of Ethiopia’s bid to host COP 32 in Addis Ababa in 2027. We are grateful for the opportunity that the Conference of the Parties is giving us to spearhead the collective effort to tackle one of the most daunting challenges faced by humanity. We are honored to be entrusted by the global community with such an important responsibility. This recognition reflects confidence in Ethiopia’s leadership in climate action and its capacity to host major global events.
Ethiopia remains fully committed to delivering a robust and meaningful outcome and inclusive COP 32 that advances collective action against climate change. Building on the momentum of the Second Africa Climate Summit, Ethiopia will continue to champion Africa as a continent of solutions and a committed partner in the global effort for a sustainable future.
Together with members of the Prosperity Party Executive Committee, we visited the completed corridor development project extending from Sar Bet to German Square, the Garment Factory, and the Furi area. Covering more than 589 hectares, it stands as the second largest and widest site after Kazanchis. The project includes the construction of 16.5 km of asphalt roads, an additional 3 km of internal roads, and pedestrian walkways stretching a total of 33 km. It features plazas, sports facilities, children’s playgrounds, and 5.2 km of riverbank development. In addition, there are parking areas and terminals, an electric car charging station, and 1,107 shops built by both private and government entities. The development also encompasses 50.5 hectares of green spaces, public toilets, 13.3 km of bicycle lanes, and 38 taxi and bus bays. Our national corridor development projects like this one are playing a vital role in boosting local economic activity, improving mobility, and enhancing social interaction by creating vibrant, accessible, and sustainable urban spaces.

Re GERD - my advice to Egypt. Drop the political drama and engage with Ethiopia professionally on technical issues. I know from experience that Ethiopia cannot be bullied and the more you push the more immovable they become. It’s time to accept today’s reality!
This morning we inaugurated the Welmel River Irrigation Development Project, located in Delo-Mena Woreda of the Bale Zone in Ethiopia’s Oromia Region, which was initiated by the Ministry of Irrigation and Lowlands, with the primary objective of enhancing agricultural productivity and ensuring food sovereignty through the efficient utilization of the Welmel River for irrigation development. By establishing a sustainable surface irrigation system, the project seeks to improve the livelihoods and resilience of local communities that have long depended on rain-fed agriculture.
Upon full operation, the project will provide reliable irrigation for 9,687.45 hectares of farmland, supporting around 20,000 farming households. This is expected to substantially enhance agricultural productivity, increase resilience to drought, and create new employment opportunities within the community. Beyond these economic impacts, the project contributes to improved food sovereignty by strengthening local water management institutions, promoting community ownership, and ensuring the sustainable use of the Welmel River’s resources.

Following the handover of the model rural villages in the Halaba and Kembatta zones on Wednesday, today we have handed over those built in the Hadiya and Silte zones. These three-bedroom homes, equipped with biogas facilities for cooking, solar energy, chicken coops, and separate sheds for cattle, stand as symbols of our vision for prosperous rural communities where affordable homesteads are constructed using locally sourced materials.
As a society, we may often suffer from an ingrained mentality that says “it’s not possible” whenever a new idea or ambitious project emerges. However, we must not fall into disbelief or denial of what has already been achieved and made tangible. Citizens must believe that change is possible and that by directing our resources toward the right priorities, we can indeed transform our communities. The work accomplished in the four zones of Central Ethiopia should be replicated across the region, and I count on the regional leadership to realize this grand task.
For Africa, now is not the time to wait and watch.
We have the people, creativity, and natural wealth to build a prosperous and fair future. What we need is to connect our efforts and act with common purpose.
Transformative Diplomat
Dr. Ambassador Jemal Baker Abdula has made history as a transformative figure in Ethiopian diplomacy, accelerating the country’s international relations. One remarkable example of his innovative approach is the translation of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s newly launched Medemer book into Pakistan’s local language, a move aimed at fostering deeper understanding of Ethiopia’s reform, driven diplomatic philosophy and strengthening ties between the two nations.

The launch of the pan-African media platform Pulse of Africa marks an important step toward countering negative media representations of Africa and asserting our agency in shaping our own narratives. Although Africa is vast and full of potential, it has too often been portrayed as smaller and less capable than it truly is. This is why Pulse of Africa represents such a significant and humble beginning and one that, in the coming years, is poised to grow into a leading continental media platform.
There is no doubt that Africa is on the path to becoming a major industrial powerhouse and a key global player. The establishment of Pulse of Africa is therefore a forward-looking step, laying the foundation for a strong and authentic African voice in global media.
