In simple terms, if your body’s energy system is struggling, exercising harder is often like pressing harder on the accelerator of a car that already has a fuel delivery problem. The engine may rev higher for a short time, but the underlying problem gets worse because the system is being asked to do more than it can reliably support. The stable energy production zone (around FatMax/VT1) is different. It is the highest intensity at which the body can still produce energy in a controlled and sustainable way without accumulating excessive physiological stress. In this zone, the muscles, heart, brain, and mitochondria can communicate properly, energy production remains balanced, and the body can repeatedly practice doing what it is supposed to do: generating stable energy.
A useful analogy is rebuilding a damaged electrical grid. If the grid is unstable, you don’t fix it by immediately switching on every factory and every stadium in the city. You first restore stable power to the network, prove that the system can handle the load, and then gradually increase demand. FatMax/VT1 training works in a similar way. It repeatedly exposes the body to an energy demand that is high enough to stimulate adaptation but low enough to remain stable. Over time this encourages the growth of mitochondria, improves fat burning, strengthens lactate utilisation, improves blood vessel function, enhances autonomic nervous system regulation, and teaches the heart and muscles to work together more efficiently.
The scientific reason this approach is so powerful is that adaptation only occurs when a biological system can repeatedly complete a task successfully. If exercise intensity is too high, the body spends most of its effort compensating and surviving rather than adapting. But when exercise occurs in the stable energy zone, the body repeatedly receives the message:
“This level of energy production is safe. Build more capacity.”
The result is that the energy system gradually expands. The same workload that once felt difficult becomes easier. The point at which fatigue, breathlessness, palpitations, or instability begin is pushed higher and higher. In essence, the goal is not to train harder—it is to train the body’s ability to produce stable energy. Once stability is restored, higher levels of performance can be built on a much stronger foundation.
That is why many of the world’s best endurance athletes spend most of their training near this zone. And it may also explain why people with metabolic dysfunction, long COVID, chronic fatigue, dysautonomia, or unexplained exercise intolerance often improve only when exercise is prescribed precisely within this stable energy production range rather than simply being told to “exercise more.” The body first needs to relearn how to produce energy reliably before it can be expected to produce more of it.
