"Why would you enter a market where the government is actively trying to hurt you?"
Economist @salimfurth of @mercatus predicted builders would flee St Paul's rent control law.
Four years later, the city admits he was right:
The next time a Premier from eastern Canada says restrictions on oil sales to the US should be on the table or talks about a united Team Canada approach consider this self inflicted wound:
This is what Eastern Canada said no to.
Energy East would have moved up to 1.1 million barrels of Canadian oil per day from the West to Eastern Canada.
Instead, hereโs what we do now:
In 2025, Canada imported 506,000 barrels of foreign crude oil every day. That cost $17.8 billion.
And 75.6% of it came from the United States.
The Eastern Canada numbers are brutal:
Ontario: 87,000 barrels/day imported
99.7% from the U.S.
Quebec: 126,000 barrels/day imported
almost 100% from the U.S.
New Brunswick: 270,000 barrels/day imported
about 54% from the U.S.
At the same time, Canada exported 4.3 million barrels/day in 2025, with about 3.9 million barrels/day going to the U.S.
Think about how insane that is.
We produce massive amounts of oil in Western Canada.
We send most of it south.
Then Eastern Canada turns around and buys oil from the Americans because we never built enough east-west infrastructure.
That is how we shot ourselves in the foot.
Energy East was not a small project. Its proposed capacity was more than double all the crude oil Canada imported in 2025.
No, it would not have replaced every imported barrel. Saint John was also meant to be an export terminal. But it would have given Canada far more control over its own energy, its own supply chain, and its own economy.
Instead, Ontario is almost fully dependent on U.S. imported crude. Quebec too. And Saint John, home to Canadaโs largest refinery, still has no crude oil pipeline connection.
So when politicians talk about sovereignty from the United States, remember this:
We had a chance to move more Canadian energy across Canada.
And we said no.
Canada does not have a resource problem.
Canada has a nation-building problem.

Pennsylvania has blocked the state's attempt to shut down Amos Miller's Farm.
Amos Miller, an Amish farmer in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, had his farm raided by the Department of Agriculture earlier this year, seizing thousands of dollars' worth of food.
Yet, despite the raid, the government couldn't provide a single piece of evidence showing that anyone in Pennsylvaniaโor anywhere elseโhas ever been harmed by any of Amos Miller's products.
This is a powerful win for food freedom and the rights of farmers.
๐จ๐ณ national Weiheng Zeng, an undergraduate student at ๐จ๐ฆ University of Waterloo, photographed facilities near OโHare International Airport in Chicago under the direction of a suspected Chinese intelligence officer and sent the photos to the officer via a Huawei phone with disposable SIM cards. Zeng, who had crossed into the US around 24 times since 2022, was paid $20 per photo. Zeng was arrested on Aug 26 โผ๏ธ
๐จ๐ณ national Weiheng Zeng has been charged in the US after federal authorities said he admitted to trespassing at properties near airports to take photos of airplanes that he sent to a mysterious figure whom he believed to be an employee of the Chinese government.
A 20-page complaint filed on Aug 26 in Detroit's federal court charges Zeng with making false statements (https://t.co/ecftsMfsKs).
Authorities said Zeng was found on surveillance footage, trespassing in a FedEx employee parking lot in Chicago in April and taking photos of aircraft at the nearby O'Hare International Airport.
When Zeng attempted to return to the US on Sun Aug 23, he was repeatedly questioned by border patrol agents and the FBI, ultimately telling investigators that he had been paid a few hundred bucks to take photos of specific aircraft, send them to a contact in China, then destroy the evidence.
Zeng, currently an undergraduate student at ๐จ๐ฆ University of Waterloo, has been studying in Canada on a B1/B2 visa that he was issued in 2022.

Zeng has entered the US around 24 times since his visa was issued, including on Apr 11, when he drove a dark blue Chrysler Town & Country into Detroit via the Ambassador Bridge.
At the border, he told US Customs and Border Protection agents that he was entering the US to visit his sister in Chicago for a week and a half.

Ten days later, employees at a FedEx location at O'Hare International Airport saw an unknown individual in the employee parking lot. He lingered for about 20 minutes and was seen taking photos, walking the fence line and attempting to open locked trailers. He also climbed onto a parked forklift and appeared to take photos, either of a parked aircraft or other areas of the airport.
FedEx surveillance footage indicated that the individual was a male of Asian descent.
Additional surveillance video captured a dark blue Town & Country arriving in the employee parking lot shortly before the man was seen taking photos.
Zeng re-entered Canada via the Windsor Detroit Tunnel on Apr 23, two days after the FedEx parking lot incident.
American law enforcement later established that the license plate on Zeng's Town & Country matched the plate on the vehicle seen at the FedEx parking lot at the Chicago airport.

On Aug 23, Zeng attempted to re-enter the US via the Ambassador Bridge. He was again driving a dark blue Town & Country with the same license plate. This time, he was accompanied by two other individuals, whom he identified as his sister and his classmate. He said the three were making a one-day trip to Chicago.
Border patrol agents referred him for a secondary inspection based on the incident at the FedEx parking lot.
Authorities interviewed Zeng three separate times over the next several hours.

Zeng told investigators that he was returning to the U.S. to drop his sister off in Chicago, where she attends school. He added that his classmate, a university student studying aviation and geography, initially planned to fly Zeng and his sister from Ontario to Chicago, but they opted to drive due to bad weather.
When agents asked him about his April trip to Chicago, Zeng initially said he spent his time there visiting the zoo, Buckingham Memorial Fountain and Trump Tower, which is located in New York. When agents pressed him on this discrepancy, Zeng said he may have been confusing his Chicago trip with a prior trip to New York.

Poland refused to take Muslim immigrants.
Poland was accused of "Islamophobia."
Today, Poland is safer than any country in Europe. Women are safe.
Poland has no rape gangs, pro-Hamas demonstrations, or a single case of Islamic terrorism.

"Short of aerial bombardment, the best way to destroy a city is through rent controls."
Thatโs a good line from the late Economist Walter Williams.
But politicians donโt learn.
Four years ago, St Paul, Minnesota passed rent control.
Here's what happened:
An American journalist who accepted over $100,000 from China's Ministry of State Security was sentenced to just two years in federal prison on September 1, 2026, after covertly working to infiltrate U.S. political circles for Beijing.
Thomas Weir Pauken II, a former editor for Chinese state media outlets like CGTN and Xinhua, acted as an unregistered foreign agent for the CCP from 2019 to early 2026. Operating under a handler known as "Cathy" from China's main civilian intelligence agency, Pauken made multiple funded trips to the U.S. to recruit intelligence sources.
His handler tasked him with delivering specialized laptops and cellphones to U.S. contacts, gathering specific reports, and attempting to put Chinese intelligence directly in touch with an official from the Trump administration. In exchange, Pauken received at least $100,000 routed through his wife's account, all-expenses-paid vacations, and even offered a contact a $10,000 covert bonus to keep intelligence flowing to senior leaders in Beijing.
FBI agents arrested Pauken at a hotel near Washington Dulles International Airport in February 2026, just hours before he was scheduled to fly back to China. While his defense team argued he naively believed he was promoting peace, federal prosecutors pointed out that he exploited his U.S. citizenship and betrayed his country purely for a paycheck.
