DON’T JUMP: STAY SAFE DURING A FIRE
In the wake of the tragic Afriland Tower fire incident, where some individuals desperately leapt from upper floors to escape the flames, the Federal Fire Service extends its deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of those who lost their lives. Our thoughts and prayers are also with the injured, wishing them a full and speedy recovery. This heartbreaking event is a sober reminder of the dangers posed by fires, and the Service appeals to the public to remain calm and use safer methods during fire emergencies. Jumping from a height is extremely dangerous and can result in severe injury or death. We urge everyone to take note of the following life-saving tips:
-Don’t panic. Dial the Federal Fire Service immediately on 112 or 0803 200 3557 and provide clear details of your location and the nature of the fire
-Never jump from upper floors during a fire. Instead, move to a safe room, signal for help from windows or balconies, and wait for firefighters if you cannot safely evacuate
-If it is safe to do so, use a fire extinguisher or fire blanket to put out small flames before they spread
-Crawl under smoke to avoid inhalation. Use the back of your palms to check the temperature of doors and floors before moving forward
-Cover your nose and mouth with a wet cloth or handkerchief to reduce smoke inhalation
-If your clothes catch fire, stop moving, drop to the ground, and roll over repeatedly until the flames are out
-Shut doors behind you where possible to slow the spread of fire and smoke
-Once outside, do not go back in. Go to a safe assembly point and wait for emergency responders
-In case of a fire, always use the stairs; never use elevators
-Familiarize yourself with escape routes and fire exits in buildings you frequent.
The Federal Fire Service emphasizes that proper knowledge and calm action can save lives during emergencies.
All building owners and managers are also encouraged to maintain functional fire alarms, fire extinguishers, sprinklers, and clear escape routes at all times.
For emergencies, please call the Federal Fire Service on 0803 200 3557
immediately.
