https://t.co/PphiZnfJI3 While studying Crohn's, I found that there are numerous genes connected to it and IBD, but only a few that are unique to it. I also learned that dietary treatments can be effective in lessening symptoms, but need to be individualized. #prescottgenomics
@NoemiG125 That’s really interesting history and unfortunately it doesn’t surprise me that it ended up being used to discriminate. Now that it’s voluntary, I hope that it is much more useful for those being tested. #prescottgenomics
@NickPatenaude19 @RylieMcCoy Agreed, I think it could be very detrimental to genetic research if private companies started patenting common genes. I feel like we’d be nowhere near understanding the human genome like we are today if that were the case. #prescottgenomics
@Cuz_science_lit I’ve heard about that rule before, but it is really interesting how it had to become a rule in the first place! If it weren’t a rule, do you think it would be common for employers to require your genetic info before hiring? #prescottgenomics
Genetic testing is governed in the US, but countries like India - where testing has increased in popularity - do not have clear laws for testing facilities. It begs the question of what exactly ungoverned companies might be able to get away with. #prescottgenomics#genetictesting
@NoemiG125@23andMeResearch Really interesting! I hope that their research is the start of something that could change how modern medicine deals with things like solid tumors! #prescottgenomics
@elvis_demirovic Great point, there are definitely pros and cons that need to be considered before going through with genealogy testing. I wonder if there could ever be a case where the cons outweighed the pros? Interesting to think about! #prescottgenomics
Very interesting discovery using duplex sequencing - a type of ultra deep sequencing that shows information from both strands of DNA. Also very interesting that mutations can occur with more frequency as we age. #prescottgenomics
@RylieMcCoy Crohn's is difficult to treat because of how it affects people on an individual basis - no two cases are alike or treated with the same thing effectively. That said, having so many associated loci does make it difficult to determine which ones predetermine it! #prescottgenomics
Crohn's disease https://t.co/U2Xfs4r86u Chron's is an inflammatory disease that is inheritable and can be contracted from environmental factors. It isn't curable, but can be treated with varying success with drugs and surgery. #prescottgenomics
@Shosimple22@ensembl That's awesome! While exploring their site I also saw that there are tools allowing the exploration of other species' genomes as well as giving the ability to compare species' genomes. Very cool! #prescottgenomics
@NCBI’s genetic testing registry makes it easy to dive into different aspects of our genetics without pay walling the curious consumer. I found it interesting to view the reference genomes they had, if not a bit difficult to find what I was looking for. #prescottgenomics
This is a screenshot of an ideographic view of our chromosomes. Different graphs like these allow for a visualization of our genes. By clicking on a chromosome, we can delve deeper into the genes that make them up. #prescottgenomics
@myriadgenetics@GlobalGenes It’s scary how long it can take for a disease to be noticed after symptoms. If genetic testing can be proven to help catch these #rarediseases then it could be a major aid for diagnosing patients if it becomes more mainstream. #prescottgenomics
According to @GlobalGenes, it takes an average of 4.8 years for a patient to be diagnosed with a #raredisease from the time of symptom onset. #Carrierscreening can help assess disease risk before starting a family. Learn more: https://t.co/AINRH14LCD #prenatalscreening
@GenomicHealth is my company of choice to highlight this week. They work on developing ways to catch cancer early on so treatments can get started right away! #prescottgenomics
