Did you know early onset Alzheimer's is easier to detect than late onset? Or that your gut microbiome can also affect certain brain diseases? These are just a few things I learned from my final genetics project on Alzheimer's in #prescottgenomics class.

@_RachelAnastasi I find it interesting that they're talking about sharing genetic information with relatives or another third party. Unless someone is listed as an emergency contact or consent is given, why should a family member be given access? #prescottgenomics
@elvis_demirovic I agree that people should not be disqualified from a job just because of a potential genetic disposition to a certain disease that the individual has no control over. If that were the case, imagine how many people would be disqualified from jobs. #prescottgenomics
@RylieMcCoy This is huge for the genetics field so further research can be conducted and so that researchers aren't limited to the genes they are able to use. This reminds me of the story of #HenriettaLacks and how her cells were used without permission. #prescottgenomics#HELAcells
Under GINA, The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (2008), it covers family members of the employee who are considered to be dependents. Does this include an unborn fetus seeing as it depends on the mother for survival? #prescottgenomics#GINA#EEOC
As we are learning in class about different alleles and variants, this locus has been found to be associated with the loss of smell or taste in over half of those who tested positive for Covid-19 (willing participants in a 23andMe study) #prescottgenomics
Why do some people lose smell or taste with Covid?
Genetics may play a role.

There is a 40% decrease in cerebral blood flow (CBF) in patient's with AD, affecting cognition. So, targeting CBF before onset of Alzheimer's may be the key, which involves aerobic fitness to increase CBF. This increased blood flow may slow the onset of AD #prescottgenomics

Mild-moderate exercise has little to no effect on cerebral blood flow in already diagnosed Alzheimer's patients. However, they did find that an exercise regime has positive effects on cognition & physical function in these individuals #prescottgenomics
@NickPatenaude19 Not only can @Ancestry show your ethnicity percentages, but it can go into even more detail about specific regions within a country that your ancestors came from, which I also think is very fascinating. #prescottgenomics
I found this interesting because not only can you see where you came from, but you can get a good idea of how recently, or not so recently, a certain population has been in your family. @23andMe#prescottgenomics
This is showing that based on your genome ancestry, you can see just how many generations ago a most recent ancestor was in a particular population. #prescottgenomics
Fitting we're choosing a genetic disease to learn more about this week and it also happens to be Age-Related Macular Degeneration month. Does having poor eyesight and already having to wear corrective lenses put you at a higher risk for AMD? #prescottgenomics
This month, we're talking about eyes and DNA – in particular, how genetics can impact the risk of developing a vision loss condition called age-related macular degeneration, or AMD. #AMDAwarenessMonth (1/4)
@TaylorLUNHM@PGorg Are other countries not as open to having their genomes sequenced, what do these barriers consist of I wonder? Or is it that they lack the opportunities and resources to do so? #prescottgenomics
@NHGRI_Director Eric Green is the director of the National Human Genome Research Institute at the National Institute of Health (NIH) where he is focused on advancing human health based on genomics. He was also largely involved on the Human Genome Project.
