Men often show profound cognitive dissonance when it comes to rape. Fathers will say they don’t want their daughters around boys because they “know what teenage boys are like,” yet many of those same men dismiss feminists and insist “not all men” are dangerous.

Women are called paranoid for being cautious around men, but if something happens, we’re blamed for being naive or putting ourselves in a risky situation. If we refuse to go somewhere with a man because he might be dangerous, we’re accused of unfairly generalizing. If we do go and something happens, then it’s also our fault.

Many men recognize the risk men pose to women but they only fully acknowledge it when it comes to their own daughters.

Publiquei ontem sobre isso e apurei pelos comentários que vários homens estavam falando que as mulheres não saberiam usar, que poderia ser perigoso para elas mesmas e não sei o que. Na mesma semana em que explodiu na bolha evangélica o questionamento do voto feminino. Se você, mulher, pensa que quando o homem pede liberação da posse e do porte de arma, ele está pedindo para você, repense. Eles não confiam na sua autonomia para sequer votar, que é um ato de pensar e apertar dois dígitos numa urna, quem dirá para ser a guardiã da arma da sua casa. O conservador médio brasileiro quer se armar, impedir a mulher de votar e aplicar em seu lar a política do Big Stick de Roosevelt: “fale manso e tenha um porrete nas mãos”. E você, bem caladinha, obedecendo não por amor, mas sabendo do risco que corre se sair da linha. O conservador, que deveria optar por mudanças graduais, duela internamente com o seu próprio reacionarismo, que deseja uma ruptura abrupta com o presente e a volta para o passado que ele nunca viveu, mas tem certeza de que é melhor. Na verdade, são ultraconservadores, antiliberais, autoritários e, sobretudo, anacrônicos.

Okay. Then show me men being gang-raped by women at scale. Show me adult women trafficking adult men for sexual exploitation. Show me laws written to control men’s bodies and reproductive autonomy. Show me sororities known for drugging and raping men.

Show me men living with the threat of gender-based acid attacks. Show me men being killed for rejecting women or for trying to leave relationships.

When those things start happening on a systemic level, then we can have a conversation about women being “just as bad as men.” Until then, stop pretending the scale of harm is the same.
