U.S. Marine Corps | Medal of Honor
Born this day, August 25, 1937.
Then-2nd Lt. Capers led a 9-man Force Recon team deep into enemy territory near Phu Loc, Vietnam, March 31–April 3, 1967.
Multiple contacts. Outnumbered. On the final day, a claymore ambush and heavy fire tore through the team. Capers took multiple gunshot and shrapnel wounds and a broken leg.
He refused to quit.
Kept leading.
Directed supporting fire.
Got every one of his Marines on the bird before he would board.
Nearly 60 years later, on June 18, 2026, President Trump finally placed the Medal of Honor around his neck — the first Black Marine officer to receive it.
