Bridging the gap between research and policy begins with effective science communication.

Through the Science-Policy Communications Fellowship, we equip public health researchers with the skills to translate evidence into policy and action.

During a four-day workshop in Abuja, fellows strengthened their capacity in media engagement, storytelling, and data visualisation, and gained firsthand insights from field visits to key institutions, including @PVAC_NG, @SWApGov, and @nhia_nigeria.

Turning public health research evidence into policy impact requires understanding the existing policies. As part of the Science-Policy Communications Fellowship, fellows visited key health institutions driving change in Nigeria. The aim of these field visits was to understand the current policy thrusts of the health sector and the opportunities for researchers.

Bridging the gap between science and policy is essential to solving Africa’s most pressing health challenges, from persistent infectious diseases to inequitable health systems. Without strong scientific communication, valuable research risks are overlooked in policymaking.

To address this, Nigeria Health Watch launched the Science-Policy Communications Fellowship, a capacity-building programme that began on 10 July 2025 to equip public health researchers with the skills to translate evidence into policy and behaviour change.

By equipping fellows to communicate effectively with policymakers and the public, the workshop strengthened their role in shaping evidence-based policies and fostering informed public debate.

They will now apply these skills in a real-world capstone project, using evidence-informed communication to influence policies, public behaviour and overall strengthen health systems across Nigeria and Africa over the next 6 weeks.
