In this video, Charlie Ngounou of @AfroLeadership_ posits that budgets aren’t just for Ministries of Finance – they decide:
health services, education, child protection, support for farmers etc

Through our EU funded initiative - Collaborating for Open and Accountable Budgets (COAB), partners are learning to:
- Link their work to public budgets
- Break big numbers (GDP, inflation) into real impacts on kids, women & farmers
- Use budget evidence to demand accountability

If you don’t follow the budget, it’s hard to turn rights and plans into real change.

Civil society can keep budgets open even in the middle of crisis. 🇧🇫💬

Civil society in Burkina Faso has played a crucial role in sustaining budget openness despite a prolonged period of political instability and insecurity.
This mini case study “Burkina Faso: Navigating fiscal governance during a security crisis,” highlights how IBP and civil society organizations working through the Collaborating on Open and Accountable Budgeting (COAB) initiative adapted in order to keep engagement channels open, strengthen ties with regional bodies, and continue publicly voicing the budget-related needs for the people of Burkina Faso.

In this video, Kulu Abdullahi, Leader, Federation of Muslim Women Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN), shares how working with IBP changed the way they engage on healthcare:

📊 They learnt how to understand and track health budgets
❓ They began asking questions when money for primary health care was not released or properly spent
📈 They used this knowledge to advocate for increased budget allocations to primary health care
✅ And to check whether funds were truly used for the services communities were promised

As we mark World Universal Health Coverage Day, this is a reminder:
Universal health care isn’t just about policies and speeches – it’s about following the money so that clinics, medicines and frontline services are funded and delivered.
