Today, May 28th 2026, marks a monumental day in Canada.
On this day twenty-six years ago, the remains of the Unknown Soldier were laid to rest at the National War Memorial in Ottawa.
The Royal Canadian Legion was determined to establish a resting place of honour and respect for one soldier, that would represent all. A key decision was to select the Unknown Soldier from the First World War battlefield near Vimy Ridge, symbolizing a defining moment in Canadian history when all four Canadian divisions fought together under Canadian command
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a sacred site of Remembrance, representing all of the servicemen and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

In the early 1980s, as Canada’s wartime generations aged, the Legion expanded its membership to include families and supporters. This ensured the organization’s mission—to serve Veterans and keep Remembrance alive—would continue for future generations.
Membership surpassed 600,000 for the first time. This included 330,000 ordinary (Veteran) and life members and 150,000 associate (family) members.
