1. Americans think that if our athletes simply always chose soccer we'd automatically be dominant at it
2. Europeans believe Americans are too dumb to ever understand their special game enough to EVER be good at it.

@jeffreyboadi_ @CoffeeBlackMD The North American equivalent is hockey. To be good at it, you must play it from the time you're 5. You must think hockey, always. You must go to prep school. Being good at other sports just doesn't translate. But we really seem to care about it and nurture it. And we thrive

I totally agree that our development sucks. But if over 50% of our athletically inclined, coordinated, motivated kids were solely focused on soccer, as they are in most other countries... our chances of finding a freak or two goes up drastically

@AtxDem NBA still 70-77% domestic. I will grant- there are a few absolute freaks from foreign countries. But being far and above the best basketball league in the world, you would expect that

In the prem, only 1/3 is British. La liga 62% Spanish. Seria a 32% Italian.

@AtxDem This is even worse in teens- soccer drops to 6th. Tons of kids start with soccer (it's the easiest for littles to play) and switch at the most crucial time.

@AtxDem This isn't accurate- I just looked this up. Core participation (practice+games more than 25 per year) soccer ranks 4th.

@FIFABrit These things are cyclical. You get "golden ages" with crops of excellent players, then at times you fall off (see Italy). If the US poured all their resources into soccer, they'd be mostly good, and at times excellent- because the math (population, resources) would favor that.

@PaulSpacey No, I'm saying most European countries bring kids in better, they KEEP them, they're less tempted to do other things. They have MUCH better development, soccer is option 1, always. Their pro teams groom them (at their expense). We do it all wrong regardless of expenditure

@PaulSpacey Essentially, some kids start with soccer here, but almost any kid with coordination and athleticism and competitiveness moves to the more lucrative, pristigious (at least in the US) sports by their early teens.

Our development model is hilariously bad.

Seems to me the rules are just whatever the hell you want them to be

Soccer is odd that it overtly encourages you to dive

@Nick___Collins With cards, wreckless play and intent have always factored. Has to be, given the consequence.

This was a normal play with a very unintended outcome. If the penalty for an accident is 1.5 game suspension your application of rules is just... bad.

This is why they dive!!!!!
