Iran’s former national team goalkeeper arrested and missing after likening the Supreme Leader to Satan.

Rashid Mazaheri publicly condemned the regime over the January #IranMassacre and compared Ali Khamenei to Satan in a social media post for directing the mass killing of more than 40,000 Iranian protesters.

He was arrested shortly after the post and has been held without contact since.

Within hours, state-linked outlets claimed he was arrested over “fraud” and “financial debt,” presenting those allegations as the reason for his detention.

His wife says those claims are an engineered lie meant to conceal the real motive that his detention is political.

She says there has been no communication with him for more than three days.

A previous financial complaint against him had already been dismissed.

The global football community must speak up for Rashid Mazaheri and for the Iranian football community.

Numerous footballers were killed in the #IranMassacre simply for protesting, and dissenting players continue to face arrest and intimidation.
