Keeping a player who you offered a new and better deal to since April, back when you were in a title race, two months before the World Cup even began (and who kept resisting, kept giving excuses not to sign) because he’s eyeing a move to a club that treated him like nothing, boycotted the Ballon d’Or he won, and had to convince its own president just to unblock the transfer because the player is desperate to join them. Resisting £100m from that club for a player like that is genuinely stupid. He’s made it clear he doesn’t want to stay here anymore. Keeping unhappy, injury prone players around serves no purpose whatsoever. SELL HIM NOW.

But I find it bizarre. Genuinely strange, almost embarrassing, that you’d force a move to a club that treated you like nothing. A club whose own president doesn’t want you and reportedly has to be convinced to even accept you. A club that hurled all manner of insults at you the moment you won the Ballon d’Or and then had the audacity to boycott the very award you earned.

I don’t think you understand how frustrating this is for the loyal fans who stood by you. Who were with you through your ACL, through the darkest stretch of your career, who defended you against rival fans who mocked and slandered you at every turn.

I don’t think you understand how angry we are.

You could have ranked above the Vincents, the Davids, the Sergios, the Kevins, the Bernardos.
You could have gone down as the greatest player to ever walk through the Etihad. But you won’t. And we won’t ever view you the same way again.
