The last photo ever taken of Marco Siffredi, just before his second attempt to snowboard down Mt. Everest. 2002 ....

Marco Siffredi was a French professional snowboarder and extreme mountaineer known for pushing the limits of what was considered possible on the world’s highest peaks. In 2001, he made history by becoming the first person to successfully snowboard down Mount Everest, descending via the Norton Couloir on the north face. That descent alone placed him among the most daring figures in extreme sports.

In 2002, Siffredi returned to Everest with an even more ambitious goal. He aimed to descend the Hornbein Couloir, a far steeper and more technical route that drops sharply from near the summit. The Hornbein is notorious for its narrowness, exposure, and avalanche risk, and it had never been snowboarded before. This photograph was taken near the summit during that second attempt, capturing Siffredi moments before he set off.

Shortly after beginning his descent, Siffredi disappeared. Search efforts found no trace of him, and his body was never recovered. Most experts believe he was swept away by an avalanche or lost control on the extreme terrain. His disappearance underscored the unforgiving nature of Everest, where even the most skilled athletes are subject to conditions beyond human control.

Siffredi’s legacy remains complex. He is remembered both as a pioneer who expanded the boundaries of snowboarding and as a reminder of the immense risks involved in chasing firsts on the world’s highest mountain.

The Hornbein Couloir drops at angles exceeding 50 degrees in sections, making it one of the most dangerous descent routes on Everest and a major reason Siffredi’s 2002 attempt is still considered nearly unimaginable today.
