For the contingent of this @CanesFootball fan base who just loves spouting phrases like "took the foot off the gas"—complaining that #Miami "got conservative" and "wasn't taking enough downfield shots late":

1. Listen to @AhmmonR2 preaching here on @CanesInSight earlier today about the interior of the offensive line getting figured out and falling apart late in the game (https://t.co/GdvxPgOGZc)—our guy really lays out what's going on with this line, the personnel and the efforts being made to shuffle guys around, en route to finding the best positions for each guy and putting together not just a unit, but THE unit to gel this fall.

2. Go back to 2nd-and-8 late third quarter with just over three minutes remaining and Miami at their 14-yard line in what was a 31-13 game at the time.

#DarianMensah was 24-of-24 for 213 yards and three touchdowns after a screen to #VandreviusJacobs was snuffed out for two.

On the very next play, #ShannonDawson dialed up a vertical route combo where Jacobs ran a deep streak to clear out the secondary, #DaylynUpshaw was the target—running a hard slant / dig to the middle of the field, past the sticks—and #CooperBarkate ran an out.

This was also the play that Mensah got up limping; flushed out of the pocket by linebacker #DeuceDyce—who was spying the quarterback, and who chased him down after the entire pocket collapsed and Mensah rolled right, looking for Barkate near the sticks—avoiding the sack and dumping off the incompletion.

Mensah got up, hobbled back to the line as Dyce appeared to roll up on the back of his leg—not quite as aggressively as #AshaadWilliams rolling up on #MartyBrown—but one could imagine #MarioCristobal and staff's biggest concern with a two-touchdown lead (and an offensive line struggling in the second half) was to protect their multi-million dollar quarterback, as well as the rest of their season.

There wasn't a play calling problem in the fourth quarter, nobody was purposefully conservative and it wasn't a foot-off-the-gas situation.

3rd-and-9 in a 33-20 game with just under eight minutes remaining, Dawson dialed up a seal-read, but Wake tried to bracket Toney in the slot (linebacker #DylanHazen faking the the run) so he was doubled at the sticks, while Lofton beat his man down the seam for what should've been a rumble-in touchdown and a 40-20 lead that puts the game away.

Again line protection completely disintegrated and the throw was rushed, overthrowing a sure touchdown, while Mensah took yet another hit on the play, so yes, the following possession—a 13-point lead with about five minutes remaining—were a few more bubble screens and run out of self-preservation, before a career-long field goal attempt (53-yards) from #JakeWeinberg; a bone-brained played that everyone has a right to question.

#EthanOConnor iced it the following possession with the interception and the #Canes got out with a 33-20 win—but don't be confused for a moment as to that late game shift in thinking; the interior offense line didn't adjust to halftime changes made by Deacs' defensive coordinate Scottie Hazelton and they had the Canes' o-linemen sideways an unable to protect Mensah.

As gut-wrenching as it was to lose both Brown and #JoshMoore for the year—running back and wide receiver rooms are deep.

Losing the multi-million dollar Mensah three games into this season due to suspect line play; 2026 would've gone to hell and in handbag by mid-September.

So yeah, sometimes SURVIVING is as important as THRIVING and you take the 13-point win home to heal-up, regroup and to get back to work.

@SteveKim323 The only linemen I’ve seen worse than SJ at UM was Zion Nelson in his first game against UF. And he came in as a true freshman TE that moved to LT

If this is the type of production we will get from him with an opponent with a pulse, I rather take lumps with Cantwell/Congdon and fast track their development and get some mass in that OL room.

The SJ experiment should end after what we saw at Wake and his best position is at fullback .
